Not letting the moment pass me by, I quickly reach into my purse and pop the cork on the small vial of my essence I was going to give the women. I pour out the small vial over the child, and watch as it seeps into his skin. The change is instant as his bright hazel eyes peer up at me and his lungs take in a breath without fighting, and then he proceeds to let out a scream.
Eek!
What kind of devil child is this? Matthew runs over to me and proceeds to take the child from me, shushing him and talking in some type of language I’ll definitely have to learn.
“Lilith!” Jessup calls. Turning to face him, I see him holding a bundle in his arms as well and it makes my heart melt. “Can you help save him?” his voice catches as he asks for help.
I quickly grab the rest of the vials I had brought and spend the next hour, saving the pieces of my harem’s heart.
CHAPTER18
Not Quite Right
Matthew
Ican’t believe Lilith is really here. I mean I listened to everything that Carl said last night, but to see her sitting here in front of us, it’s unreal. And if I’m reading the room correctly, I’m not the only one. The past four hours have been a blur with emotions ranging from joy to devastation, anger, to remorse. Nothing has been off the table in the range of the unbelievable.
For instance, I never thought Lilith would ever attack pregnant women. She’s always enjoyed torturing souls and the Demons that needed to be put in their place, but I had thought children were off limits.
She did step up and help though.
While our sons were on the brink of death, she held them close and applied her essence which in turn saved their lives, according to Steinbeck. He checked them over before he joined us in cleaning up the aftermath of Lilith’s destruction. While we cleaned and took care of the issue at hand, we allowed Lilith to take care of the children, under our watchful eyes of course. I watched as she hummed while she cleaned, dressed, and even named our children. Leviathan, Knox, Ryker, and Ezekiel.
She conjured up matching cribs with their names engraved on them, and they are currently resting peacefully at her side as I sit across from her. I’m not going to lie, seeing her like this does something to me. I like seeing her maternal side come out. I just wish it hadn’t started with the destruction of so many lives.
After cleaning up the room and disposing of the bodies, we needed a story to cover our tracks, and that’s where Daniel came in. He had some powerful friends high up on the political food chain that could easily get us out of trouble. We’re no strangers to hiding bodies, but with Earth’s politics, we needed to work around a few obstacles, like a paper trail.
“Well, my friend is going to take care of the report for us. Thankfully the girls don’t have any immediate family,” Daniel says with a somber look while walking through the living room to join us.
Well since that’s done, it looks like the only problem we now face is the woman sitting in front of us.
I’m torn as I look back at Lilith. She looks so serene as she glances down at her son, Ryker. Lilith is the reason my son, Leviathan, is alive right now, yet he was in that position because of her to begin with.
“Tell me again, what happened?” Jessup says, pinching the bridge of his nose before his eyes soften as he takes in his son lying in his crib.
Lilith’s jaw clenches in frustration, and I feel her desperation to have us believe her. She takes in a deep breath before placing her hands into her lap and looks at our group.
“I came here only to get to know the women and to give them my essence, Jessup. I didn’t plan on anything else to happen besides that,” she tells him. “Please, you have to believe me. I didn’t do it. I know hurting them would only hurt you in the long run, and I came here to get you back. I miss you all and I love you.”
I feel her innocence at the forefront of her mind, but there’s something deeper there…something likesatisfaction? Why would there be satisfaction as an undercurrent to this situation?
“Everything was going well, until I saw all of their matching jewelry and I asked about it.” She turns to Carl to ask, “Why didn’t you tell me they were all wearing Demstones?”
“What?” Carl startles. “Where did you see those?”
“The girls all had matching stones that they received from a fortune teller…” she trails off as she takes in our faces.
How did we not know about this? I mean, besides the one night stand I had, which I was somewhat tipsy during, I don’t pay much attention to human jewelry. Why would I?
“Could that have been what allowed us to ‘perform’ that night?” Daniel asks the group.
“It’s possible, depending on what spells were layered in the stones,” Carl replies.
Shit!Didn’t Layla mention something about how close the girls were that they even had matching jewels? Is that what they were talking about? Could that be why we all decided to hook up with them? Were we somehow compelled or spelled? And if that was true, why wasn’t Carl affected by it?
“They told me a story about how a fortune teller gave them matching jewelry—which was the Demstones—and told them where to find you all and how you would be their true loves. When Layla handed me her stone, I blacked out. I awoke to find…my handiwork. Please!” She chokes a sob back as she drops to her knees from her chair. “Don’t cut me out because of something I couldn’t control. At least let me work my way back into your lives,” she pleads once again and tears start to stream down her cheeks.
I can feel how desperately she loves us and wants us back. It’s as if she’s pulling at my heart with her bare hand and asking for me to hug her. I want to go to her and wrap her in my arms and tell her everything will be okay, but I also sense those fragments of deep-rooted feelings that are telling me she’s taking sick pleasure in this.
