On many occasions Lilith and I had discussed different ways to possibly have kids since she was barren. She was cursed with infertility when she was cast out as Adam’s first wife. So, a few years before we were slated to come to Earth, we experimented on pulling her essence and making children that way. So of course, when we came to Earth, I brought her frozen egg with me in hopes that she would change her mind and we could carry out our plan. Or maybe it was a part of me that just wanted a piece of her by my side. Either way, I was glad I had brought it because it was only when the guys announced they messed up and got the other women pregnant, that the idea of using Lucy even occurred to me. I haven’t even told the guys what I’ve done. I’m sure they think I used Lucy’s eggs to have a child.
I’ll have to straighten that out with them soon.
Maybe I made the mistake in not explaining all the science to Lucy and how surrogates work. She probably thinks she’s carrying ‘our’ child, which is the furthest thing from the truth. Either way, she signed all the proper documents, Daniel’s lawyers looked over them, and she’s getting more money than a Fortune 500 business.
Before I can retort, a soothing balm hits my chest as a musical voice filters in behind me.
CHAPTER13
Here I come, ready or not
Lilith
Looking through the kitchen window, I can’t help but wonder who the pregnant woman is that’s causing Carl distress. She doesn't look like a lover, more like someone that needed a firm hand, especially if I had anything to do with it. I finally found my mates a couple of days ago. I probably would have found them sooner if it hadn’t been for the damned Demons inside of me fucking things up. I would blackout and find myself a hundred miles away from my original starting point. Thankfully, they can’t control me all of the time; they would probably need another two or three stuffed into my head to have enough control for that. I was more than determined to find my mates though, inconvenience or not. But from what I can tell, the rumors were true. My men have moved on without me, all except Carl. The only question I have right now is why.
‘So you can see him move on without you in person. There’s no reason to go in and see him,’the guttural voice—Rocks—hisses out.
I had come to the realization that even though they weren’t the smartest Demons to possess me, they did have some type of self-preservation since they wouldn’t tell me their names. So I’ve come to name them myself.
‘Yes. He’s clearly busy with his new lover,’the squeaky voice Demon—Chew Toy—laughs.
‘This is boring, let’s go,’the serious voice—Grumpy—whines.
I suppress a growl at their comments and watch my mate.
Anwen was one sneaky Fate. When she had said, ‘my heart was a compass,’ she wasn’t joking. Once I made it here to Washington, it was only a matter of time—and a matter of following the pains in my chest—until I found them. Turns out the stronger they were, the closer I was to finding them. And finding them, I did. And this woman, pregnant or not, is making my prince uncomfortable, and I can’t have that.
My first instinct when I saw my mates again was to show them why you didn’t cross the Queen of Hell. But after observing them for a time, they didn’t seem as happy as they presented themselves to the world. Their lovers obviously didn’t know about their abilities. From what I saw, Jessup doesn’t shapeshift and run amuck even with their houses being this secluded. Daniel doesn’t seem to sleep, and he’s been spending his days either working out or showering, by himself I might add.
Matthew is the only one that appears somewhat content, but that might have been because he wasn’t surrounded by Supes always trying to use him for his abilities or having to constantly shield himself. Carl looks downright miserable, but not once do I doubt his loyalty. He has turned his house into a shrine of me. Pictures of us litter his dwelling, and it warms my black heart immensely. If anyone can give me answers and help put this puzzle together, it will be him.
Slipping into the house through the back door, I glide up the stairs and hear the harlot mention how she knows I’m not around, and it brings me such pleasure to know I’m about to ruin her day.
“Oh. There you are, honey,” I say in my most flattering voice. I like to call it my death-by-sugar voice.
Carl whips around so fast, almost knocking off his glasses, and freezes as he takes me in. He looks at me as if I’ve just floated down from Heaven, or in truth, just risen from Hell. Either way, it makes me feel like the goddess I know I am.
Our little moment is broken by a shriek. “Who’s this?” the young lady sitting on Carl’s sofa asks.
On the softest whisper that only I can hear, Carl says, “My mate.” Again, he makes my heart soar as I send him a smile worthy of a cover shoot. I wonder for the first time if hearts are capable of just floating away with so much love.
‘Love is overrated. He left you to rot in Hell, remember?’Grumpy says.
Stepping into his arms is like coming home. The ache in my chest soothes just a little, but the tiny ache reminds me that I’m not complete, not yet. “We need to talk, but it seems you have company.”
Pulling away from our embrace, Carl gives me a small smile and nods, but not before giving me a small kiss. His lips are as soft as I remember. “Yes, dear. Trust me and I’ll explain everything,” he whispers and turns around, grabbing my hand to address the woman trying to take my place.
“Oh, Lucy! Sorry about my manners, let me correct that. This is Lilith, my girlfriend,” he begins, and I bite my tongue so I don’t blurt out that we are more than just that simple term. He pulls our combined hands up to his lips and presses a sweet kiss along my knuckles as I maintain a sweet and neutral look. “And Lilith, this is our surrogate, Lucy. She’s the one that’s carrying our child. I just finished her checkup when she asked about you. Both are healthy as can be.”
The breath is kicked out of me as my body sways a bit from the news. Thankfully no one notices, and I’m quick to suppress my look of shock.
Our child? Did he really carry on what we were talking about after all this time?
I quickly observe Lucy’s reaction to Carl’s introduction and can easily tell she wasnotexpecting that as an answer, even though my pictures are plastered around the room. I slide on a smile and approach the poor woman, pulling her up off the sofa and into a quick hug.
“Lucy! It’s such a pleasure to finally meet you. Carl has told me so much about you. And thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart, for doing this for us. It’s been a dream of ours for the longest time.” I gently lead her towards the front door where I restrain myself from slamming her into it head first. “It’s such a relief to know that you are both healthy and doing well, but I’ll have to cut our meeting short. I wasn’t expecting Carl to have a guest, and I must get him ready for another meeting that we absolutely can’t be late for,” I say as I open the front door. “But don’t worry, I’ll be sure to check in with you soon,” I say and watch as a dazed Lucy walks out the door and down to her car.
“I see you still enjoy threatening mortals.” Carl comes up behind me and wraps his arms around my waist, calming down my internal ire.
