Not moving or looking away from me, he explains. “We found out he was a Necromancer at a young age. A kitten died and I was crying over it, and Zeke brought it back to life by accident, only for a few minutes but that was the first time. Here in Purgatory, Necromancers—if they aren’t put down first—are no more than glorified slaves, and I promised Zeke that I wouldn’t allow him to be one.” Tears start forming in Knox’s eyes, and I reach up to wipe them away when he blinks and sets them free. “There’s no way that Zeke would raise such a thing to go on a killing spree. He wouldn’t even hurt a fly. I mean, look at Lisa, that alone proves he has a golden heart to love a creature like that.” Knox continues on, and I have to admit he has a point. Lisa is the stuff of nightmares.
“Well, maybe it’s not his choice,” JP states. “What if whoever took Lynx, took Zeke and they are making him resurrect creatures for whatever reason?”
“Oh my god!” Moni mumbles. I guess she had come too during the explanation. I get a flash of blue yellow before I see her eyes roll back in her head and she’s back out, plopping back onto the sofa.
Really, how does she make it through a day?
I lead Knox back to the sofa and drape the blanket back over his legs so I can curl into his side, adding my support.
“Or he really is upset about what happened with Rez and we need to stop him,” Ryker supplies, and my stomach churns at the thought.
“No, it’s not Rez’s fault. Zeke has always fought with bouts of depression. That’s why you always found him joking and trying to make you guys laugh so much,” JP interjects.
“That makes sense,” Levi speaks up, giving us a thoughtful look.
“I don’t care what the reason is as long as you all know there’s no way that Zeke is doing this on his own,” Knox growls out, his chest vibrating.
A throat clears and we turn to face JP. “Actually, Knox, there is. If we’re coming clean on secrets, I have my share to spill as well.”
Ah Shit. Where’s the camera and the audience yelling, ‘Jerry, Jerry, Jerry?’
“I didn’t know about the Necromancer part, but Zeke’s told me of a dark entity that resides in him,” JP admits. “He said it’s the worst when he’s dealing with his depression, but he knows it’s something separate. The best way he’s described it was a darker piece of him that craves more than blood. Power, pain, and death.”
I’ll need more than the Dr. Phil show to help me with these men, that’s for sure.
ChapterThirty-Five
NEWTS
Ryker
Music drifts from the end of the block accompanied by the feel of lust in the air as it rippled over my skin like a gentle caress. This has been the only way I’ve been able to feed lately, big crowds with plenty of sexual energy.I’m to the point now that if I do have a mate, I’ll have no problem claiming her.Maybe that’s why I haven’t set up an orgy yet. I can’t live like this much longer though, I want my body to work.
With everything going on, with Zeke being missing, school, Lilith being possessed, the attack at the festival and then on Rez and Knots, school, life…the list goes on, but the point is, it’s been even harder to feed this week. So coming out tonight is essential to my health.
Newts is perfect for what I need though. And tonight will be a prime feeding time for more than just demons. Not only will lust demons be out tonight, but all the others that prey and thrive in this atmosphere. I really need a break from all the drama and to just let loose after the last two days I’ve had.
Thursday was just a complete cluster fuck with the revealation that Zeke is an unregistered necomancer. I understand the need to keep it a secret, but from us? We’re fucking family! Believe me, when we finally find his ass, I’ll let him know how I feel with my fists. I had no idea about Zeke having a dark side and his constant fight against it. When I think about it, I guess it makes sense as to why he fights against conformity, and is always pulling pranks and being light-hearted about life.
They do say the most depressed people are always smiling. Maybe that’s the same for people that fight the deeper darkness. Talk about some scary shit. We got permission from Matthew to miss school to go looking for Zeke, but only after we received a long, detailed lecture about being there for family. It isn’t a surprise that we haven’t heard from Mayor Abernathy. I’m sure he wants this on the down low so that it doesn’t ruin his precious standing in the community. Plus, he’s spent most of his time either locked in his office or with Lilith since her possession. The real question is how long has that been going on? Has she been like that my entire life? But tonight is not the time to focus on that can of worms.
I think my favorite part was seeing how adamant Rez was about coming with us, but knowing that Knots locked her up in the dorm kept a smile on my face for most of the morning. This morning’s search was cut short since there was another Sulks attack, but Chief Cloak assured us he would send in some flying shifters to scout until it was deemed safe to look once again on the ground. He’s more irritated than normal with all the recent craziness going on around Nova. If this keeps up, I wouldn’t be surprised if he arranges an impromptu blood match to work out the rage. At this point, it’s hard to decide if all of this is connected or not though.
Approaching the building and hopeful patrons waiting outside in the cool evening air, I stride to the front of the line?being one of the ‘princes’ has its benefits I suppose?and I walk up to Boris, one of the ogres, before noticing Rez, lingering at the back. Giving Boris a head nod and rolling my eyes, I walk back and pull her up with me.
“What’s wrong, hot stuff? Can’t handle the V.I.P treatment?” I tease, watching her reaction. If anything, I’m hoping I can help heal her in my own way and get my feisty temptress back. Ever since she lost her Familiar, her ‘spark’ has vanished, and I’ve missed it.
“If you call this the VIP treatment; hauling me out of my comfy pjs and throwing me out here in the cold. Remind me not to get on your bad side. I might end up thrown in a lake in the middle of nowhere,” she grumbles, pulling down the hem on the dress she picked out of the four I had conjured up for her.
Having her in our dorm Thursday was the first time I had seen her since everything went down. We were all worried about Zeke, but I pushed my luck and told her before she left our place that I wanted to treat her to a night out on Saturday so she needed to be ready. Her response was “in my dreams.” Well, sweetheart, I make my dreams happen. With JP’s help to make sure she took a shower ahead of time, she was at least washed before I showed up tonight and proceeded to bombard her with all of me until she relented to our date.
To be honest, I’m lucky I got her to come out. When I showed up at her room, she took one look in my direction and decided to snub me. Of course, that’s not going to deter me from my little minx. I know how to play her. I loved the little banter we had.
“Hey there, Temptress,” I purred, walking into her room. She gave me a disinterested glance before rolling her eyes and going back to her book.
“Go away, Ryker. I’m busy,” she said, annoyed and closed off.
Aww, my little minx, this won’t work at all.
