My alarm bells go off as I watch Knots get this goofy smile on his face, leaning in to mimic Rez.

Dude, your goose is plucked!

“Waking up without a knob,” she smiles sweetly as Knots flinches.

“Ouch,” Chester says, holding his privates and doing an about turn to walk quickly back to my room. I can’t hold in the laughter watching Knots’ face pale as Rez continues to tell him what would be against his nature, or what’s in his best interest right now.

A little over an hour later and we’re back at the log and crossing the river. Chester is looking delicious in his tan cargo pants and fitted black long sleeve shirt that fits his body just so right. I don’t even care if I’m sporting my signature horny purple right now. He’s mine and I’m allowed to drool over him.

I’m so lucky to have such a sweet mate that just gets me and my quirkiness. Plus, he doesn’t mind if I hitch a ride on his shoulder so I can rest my wings, feet, or just…well, rest in general.

“Remind me not to piss off your best friend,” Chester whispers as he pushes up his glasses.

“Isn’t she amazing?” I swoon, thinking of how Rez put the grumpy Door Knight in his place and we marched out of the dorm.

“Ahh—”

“I would watch what you say, Chester. Else I might teach her my ways.” Rez chuckles and I hear him gulp.

“It’s okay, sweetie. I’m already learning her ways, and I promise never to use them on you unless you act up,” I cheerily say, patting his cheek.

Rez picks up her pace after we clear the log, and I fly over to her and upsize to my normal four-foot self.

“Hey, did you call JP before we left?” I ask, remembering that he wanted her to check in.

“Pfft. Of course not. I’m not that stupid. Knowing my luck, he would pick up on what I was thinking, or worse, Knots would yell it in the background.” She rolls her eyes at me while my eyes practically fall out of my head. JP is gonna lose his shit! If she thinks he’s overprotective about me, she needs to get her head out of her cutie patootie and look around.

She gives me a smirk over her shoulder, “I texted him, told him I didn’t kill anyone and that I was calling it a night after I was taking a shower.”

“That’s it? Wow. He’s normally more pushy when it comes to details about class,” I confess. My brother confuses the coffee beans right out of me.

“Well, I distracted him with a few pictures of my shower,” she confesses as she bites her lower lip, and her cheeks turn a slight pink.

“Oh. OHHH. EWW. That's my brother!” I squeal and dive back to Chester for him to save me from the mental image of my brother’s pleasure.

Gag me please.

Rez throws her head back and laughs, “Just wait, Chester will be asking for the same thing from you. Or who knows, he’ll just slip into your shower and join you.” Now it’s my turn to blush.

The little hussy.

“Look! There’s my marker,” Rez yells, and runs over to the limbs she placed in the fireweed bush.

“And there’s your silver mist. Does it seem to stand out more though?” I ask and Rez turns to look at it.

“Yeah it does,” she sounds as confused as I do.

“Well, I don’t see this silver mist you’re talking about, but it might be because of those storm clouds rolling in,” Chester points up through the leaves.

I guess I really didn’t have to worry about changing into clean clothes, huh?

“H—Hey, Rez?” Chester stutters.

Rez turns and gives him a curious look, “Yeah?”

My man puffs out his chest like he’s going to square off with a wild beast and clears his throat. “I just want to make it clear that Moni is my first priority and if something were to happen, I’m getting her out of danger first and foremost. I don’t want there to be any hard feelings between us if I choose her over saving you and your Lynx.”

My mouth goes dry at his confession of devotion for me, yet I’m confused. I’ve never had anyone stand up for me like this before, but this is Rez and Lynx we are talking about. My best friend and her Familiar. They are my family. I can’t let them down!
