At least, now we have the answer as to why she was brought here, but that doesn’t answer what we are supposed to do.
‘She also said Dad was alive.’
That has my ears perking up, even if we are speaking in our heads.‘What? Did she say where he was or what he’s doing?’
She shakes her head, and tears gather on her lashes. I hate seeing her so hurt. Leaning in, I crawl closer and she pulls me into her chest while she hugs me. I feel myself tearing up, but not because she doesn’t have answers about her dad. I. CAN’T. HUG. HER. BACK.
I can’t hold my own fucking mate. I don’t realize I’m growling until she pulls away and gives me a confused look.
‘Lynx? Are you okay?’
Sighing as she sets me back on the bed, I know I might as well dump all this shit on her and see what happens. There’s no point in telling her about not being able to eat, but hopefully, with coming clean for the other stuff, I’ll be back to normal. I’m scared shitless, but since that binding is off now, I might as well pull the cat out of the bag.
See what I did there.
I lay my head on my paws and look up at her.
‘I will be after I get this off my chest.’
She gives me a worried look but nods, grabbing a pillow to get comfortable. Well, at least she’s taking me seriously.
‘I’m sorry, Rezzi. I would have told you sooner about everything. About your mother, supernaturals, about our connection. Mates…’
I trail off for a minute, hearing a sharp intake of breath. Meeting her gaze, her eyes are once again full of tears.
‘I would have never kept anything from you. The night I came to you, do you remember when your mother said, ‘Let’s give your new kitty some milk?’She nods.
‘Jillian took one look at me and knew I wasn’t what I seemed to be. I don’t know how, but she did. Your father was arguing about either keeping me or disposing of me. Your mother stepped in and just put a binding spell on me. Keeping me from talking to you about anything magical. I didn’t even get 5 minutes with you before I was silenced.’
She holds the pillow tight, and I watch as the fabric catches her tears as the truth sinks in.
‘I’m not saying this to hurt you, Rezzi. I just wanted to explain, and after this whole time, I’m finally able to. Jillian wasn’t bad, and I’m sure she had her reasons.’
Rez scoffs but I continue on.
‘I know you’re mad. I was too, and you’re entitled to your feelings. I’ve had almost 17 years to handle the emotions of what was done. You’ve had less than 6 hours. I just wanted to let you know I didn’t mean to hurt you.’
I gulp, almost choking on my own spit as what I’m about to say claws at my chest, begging not to be heard. Sitting up, I take a deep breath and spill.
‘And if you want to denounce the Mate Bond with me, I will understand. I can’treally be what you need in this form anymore. And I don’t know if that will ever happen.’
Rez would be a horrible poker player. She wears her emotions on her face for all to see. So, the look of pity stabs me in the heart. I have to look away, not being able to see that expression anymore. It’s when I start to shift back and jump off the bed that she speaks up.
‘Where are you going? We haven’t done our tradition for the night.’
I look at her and tilt my head.‘What?’
‘Lay back down, Lynx. We’ve been doing this tradition every night since our first night, and we haven’t done it yet tonight.’
I do as she says and lie back down, but I have no clue where she’s going with this. The first night I came to her, she held me all night and whispered what she loved about me. She thanked me for coming to her rescue, being her best friend, and anything that stuck out that day. I don’t know what that has to do with me just ripping out my heart and serving it up to her. Did I need to add more blood to it so she will take it?
‘I love you, Lynx. I love how funny, fierce, and unpredictable you are most of the time. I love how you watch out for me and take care of me when you don’t think I notice. I see how you glare at people that try to get too close to me. I know how you look at me. I might not have known how deep it ran, but I love you.’She pauses and bites her lip, her surefire tell that she’s nervous or thinking through something.
‘Whatcha thinking about, Rezzi? I’ll answer it, kill it, or bury it for ya.’
She laughs, and there’s that damn hope again.
‘Well, um. I’m sure you’ve noticed the guys.’I roll my eyes, and she laughs.‘Yeah, stupid thing to say. Well, I know JP talked about supernatural creatures having multiple partners. How does that work with you and your species?’
