It happens simultaneously. Lynx turns into a big cat and his paw swipes at her head while JP shoots a stream of water at the girl, making her slip on her ass.
Sprinting over to Lynx, not caring about anything but him, I drop the kit on my way. Sliding to a halt, I pull him into a tight hug while staring daggers at the lizard girl on the floor.
Lilith stands up and walks over with her hands on her hips and a scowl on her face. Even glaring, she’s gorgeous. “You two,” she points to JP and Lynx. “Out! There is to be no fighting or using your powers in this class unless it’s an emergency or instructed by an instructor,” she snaps, standing there.
So much for JP being cool with her. Grabbing my bag and shoving my book inside, I grab hold of Lynx and kiss him on the snout.
“Where do you think you’re going, Nerezza?” Lilith asks, her arms crossing over her chest.
“Out. You said to leave the class.” I finally meet her eyes, and she’s mirroring my bored look.
“No. JP and your Familiar are to leave, not y—”
“Yes,” I cut in, not caring about her punishment. I was spitting mad.How dare she?
“JP was only protecting my Familiar from Scabies over there. If you’re going to get rid of Lynx just for protecting himself, then I don’t feel like you deserve the right to teach me anything. Maybe it’s you who needs to learn common decency and respect for your fellow man. Don’t just start kicking out people because you don’t know the whole story.” I grab my bag and fling it over my head before stopping to find JP’s struck mute and the room eerily quiet.
Focusing back on Lilith, her face is stone cold. It’s like she’s a statue carved out of metal. I meant what I said though, I’m tired of the girl I’ve become while being here. The one that feels so lost in this world and wants to cry all the time. I’m better than that. I might not know how things work here, but I will stick up for my friends and back their actions.
Unapologetic, I raise my chin a little and stare her down. She’s blocking the path, and I won’t be the one turning my back to walk away. It’s a few seconds until her lip curls up a little, and she concedes.
“Very well.” She looks at JP, “You may stay and continue class.” With that, she turns around and heads back to her desk.
It’s like a switch is flipped. The tension dissolves, noises filter through, and everyone gets back to work. I slide off my bag when JP leans in and whispers in my ear, “Thank you for standing up for me.”
“Always,” I promise with a smile.
Thirty minutes later, JP leans over and takes a look at my graph. “Let me see that,” he says.
I scoot my chair over, and we lean in, taking a look at my graph on my lineage. It’s nothing like JP’s, which is clear as an empty water glass, with three graphs and the species underneath. While he has clear indicators, mine has a bunch of unknowns except for human which has a small percentage. It’s like the bottom falls out as nothing makes sense to me right now.
“Okay, class. Let’s go around the room and everyone tell us what your top three percentages are from your blood graph. If you don’t have three, then share what you did get.”
Of course, Queen Harpy is 100% Fae. Red heeled barbie is 50/50 Demon and Fae. By the way, can you believe her name is Angel? Yeah, I snickered when Lilith called on her, and she answered. Then I acted like I didn’t see her dirty look being shot my way. I think red heeled barbie suits her better, but we’ll see what comes out of my mouth.
We go around the room, and most people have three or more that I wouldn’t have guessed looking at them. The scabies girl is part dragon, lizard, and troll.
‘Can you imagine how that went down? It’s like the Troll fucked the lizard, had a baby, and then that baby fucked a dragon. Did the dragon eat it afterward? I mean, that’s like a chihuahua fucking a horse. It’s not possible! Seriously, think about it,’Lynx says, tilting his head trying to figure it out.
‘I’d rather not think about it, thanks.’
“JP, what were your top three?” Lilith asks, giving him a sweet smile. We were the last two that needed to tell our results and it was intimidating hearing all the results while I was an unknown.Whatever that meant!
Unaffected, JP clears his throat, “I only have three. 50% Demon, 30% Nix, and 20% Water Nymph,” he says and smirks at me when he notices my dropped jaw.
What the hell is that?“What’s a Nix?” I whisper to JP.
“A Nix is a shape-shifting water spirit,” Lilith answers. “They are very rare, indeed. I can’t wait to see you come into your powers.”
I wonder what part of him the mind reading comes from.
“Nerezza, your turn.” She gives me an expectant smile, and I catch a sparkle in her eyes.I think she’s looking forward to this more than I am!
“Well, I have a lot, but the top three are all ‘unknown’,” I mumble and she scowls.
“That’s impossible,” she spits out and storms over to me, ripping the chart out of my hand. Quickly reviewing my results, she glances at me with confusion and then back down at the paper. Shaking her head, she turns her attention to JP.
“Was this done right?” She asks sharply before trying to soften it with a smile but fails miserably. I would take offense at her alluding to me not doing this right, but I wanted to know what I was now too since I only had a small amount of human markers. I mean, it had to be wrong, right? I felt like a human. All signs still pointed that I was human… right? I didn’t want to believe it… but, maybe I wasn’t human?
