“No. It makes you human. He put you in a difficult spot, and while it came from a good place, it doesn’t mean you have to be happy about it.”

She rubs her hand down her face. “I’m supposed to hate you, and yet I am going to marry you.”

“It won’t be all that bad. I promise. I’ll treat you right and make sure you are taken care of.”

She nods. “And the moment we are allowed, we file for divorce and start our separation.”

I hate how she is already so quick to be rid of me. I had hoped we might grow a friendship from this, but it seems she still plans to harbor her hate for me.

“Of course. Whatever will make you happy, Rain. That’s all I want. It’s all he wanted.”

She gives me a sad smile. “If that’s what he wanted, then he wouldn’t be making us do this. Forget about all of that. What is our next step?”

I pull out my phone and do some quick research.

“It looks like we can go down to the courthouse and get the marriage license and sign it ourselves. Colorado doesn’t seem to require any witnesses. We don’t even need a pastor. We can marry ourselves,” I tell her.

“Well, that’s convenient. So let’s do that then,” she tells me.

“You don’t want a ceremony?”

She shakes her head. “I wasn’t that girl who dreamed of her wedding day her entire life. A time or two I considered it, but nothing serious. Honestly, I want to get it over with as soon as possible.”

Before I can respond, a waitress comes up.

“Hello there. My name is Bonnie, and I will be your server today. Would you like to hear our specials?”

“No, thank you. I’ll have the cheeseburger fully loaded with fries and a side of ranch,” Rain starts.

“Awesome. What about for you?” She looks at me and freezes.

“Same thing. Thank you.”

The woman is motionless for a moment before she nods and walks away.

“She just realized how attractive you are. She’s tongue-tied,” Rain jokes.

“Too bad for her, I’m engaged to be married. Besides, she is a little timid for me.” I tell her.

She rolls her eyes. “Whatever you say. You could go have one last fling before we marry. I’m sure she would be willing.”

“I promised I would be faithful, and I will. From the moment you agreed to marry me. Now, changing the subject, we will have to tell the club we are married.”

She scrunches her nose. “I figured. I mean, I plan to tell Aspen and Maggie, which means Wolf and Panther will know. I don’t want all the fuss, though.”

“Of course not, but they will. I only want you to be prepared.”

She lets her head fall to the table. “Why is this my life?”

“It’s going to be okay. We are going to keep your dad’s things, and you will get your inheritance. Then we will go our separate ways.”

She pulls her head back up. “Should we get a prenup?”

I hate how badly it hurts that she thinks I would take a dime from her. “No, Rain. Not unless you want one. I wouldn’t take a single thing from you. I know you hate me, but I had hoped you would at least know that.”

I can’t help how bitter I sound.

She reaches across the table, grabbing my hand, which surprises me. I look back at her.
