So we got in our car, with Gage and my security chief Talon and Maeve and Sarah, and drove to the fairgrounds on the outskirts of Tall Timbers.
The festival was already in full swing. The smells of grilling meat and frying dough and spinning sugary treats filled the air, bright colors swirling through the skies as the witches put on shows.
There were also human world imports. A winding track that ran a bunch of carts around in its circles seemed to have a lot of attention from dozens of people waiting to get a chance to ride it with their kids.
Sarah had strict orders to stay with Gage and Talon, but she was allowed to meet up with Paul as long as she didn’t try to ditch her chaperones. She was off like a shot, with the two men hurrying after her. Maeve left us to go peruse the witches’ booths.
“Wait, you have bumper cars?” Daphne said, dragging me toward one of the particular attractions. “A magical fair of witches and werewolves and you have bumper cars?”
“You seem so shocked.” I laughed.
“It’s just…kind of technological.”
I looked up the sparks from the rods of the little carts people were driving around. “That’s not magic? The lightning from the ceiling propelling the vehicles around?”
“No. That’s technology. Pretty old technology too. Bumper cars have been a thing since before I was even born. We should have a go,” she said, tugging on my arm.
“We’re not children. We can drive real cars.”
“Where’s the fun in that?”
“I don’t want to let you go too far from me, Daphne, and this would make us far apart. Seems to present an opportunity for some persistent idiot to get between us.”
“There’s two-seater bumper cars, silly.”
I looked at the one she was pointing at and frowned. “Would we even fit in that?”
“Are you saying you don’t want to snuggle with me, Killian?” She grinned mischievously.
I smiled. My mate wanted to be close to me.
“Oh, stop looking so smug,” she added. “Actually, I just want to see people run into you with their cars.”
“Nope. You can’t stand to be away from me.”
We walked over to the bumper car section. Daphne led me to one of the two-seater carts. It was a tight fit, as expected. I liked being pressed up against her.
The operator hit the switch, and they were off, and we got a surprising amount of speed for something without wheels and attached to a weird electrical ceiling.
Our little vehicle spun out as a cart took us from the side, and I glanced over to see it was our chef Max, grinning like a madman as he hit me. Then we were hit again from the other direction, me turning and seeing Maeve at the wheel.
Daphne burst out laughing. Her smile made me smile.
“Get Maeve,” I ordered her. “Revenge will be ours!”
Daphne and I slammed Maeve and knocked her sideways. Revenge had been taken and I was happy.
Sarah and Paul swung by, and Sarah steered right into us. Again and again.
“Get that aggression out, girl!” Daphne called out to her.
“Remember who your alpha is!” I shouted.
Wham.
Sarah rammed into us yet again.
“Sorry, Alpha Heir!” Paul shouted, grimacing.
