“We sure are, aren’t we?”
Twenty minutes later, we were cleaned up and in my office.
Fifteen minutes after that, we got a call from Black.
I answered on the first ring.
“We have them.”
I looked over at Sage, and she read the news in my eyes.
She covered her mouth with her hands and started to cry.
I pulled her into my chest and said, “Thank God.”
The kids were taken to the hospital, and I was forced to leave Sage behind to help.
Sage didn’t complain and instead volunteered to get Dean from school.
Since Dean knew her, he would have no issue with her picking him up.
I hoped.
Pushing the worry to the back of my mind, I got to work helping the parents who came in like wrecking balls looking for their kids.
Every last one of them was much like the first child found—terrified of women.
Luckily, all the dads had come along, making it all a little more bearable.
The final person to show to the party was Paola Marren in an ambulance.
She arrived handcuffed to the gurney, spitting mad.
Agent Dunn was on one side and Agent Guerrero on the other.
Dunn looked relieved. Guerrero looked like she was ready to blow the woman’s head off.
Black followed up, eyes on Guerrero.
My lips twitched at the way he mother-henned her.
Guerrero was having none of it.
Black looked like he couldn’t care less that he made her uncomfortable.
The three of them fell back, allowing the nurses and doctors to do their jobs.
“What happened?” I asked.
Guerrero looked angry as hell. “She kept them in dog kennels.”
My stomach lurched.
“She visited them every couple of hours, checked on them, fed them, then kept them locked up in there. They’ve been there for weeks.”
People were so fucking sick.
I looked at the woman. “I hope she suffers.”
