I can’t bring myself to read the rest, but I still flip through the pages, trying to figure out what it was Thane was hoping to find. The third page has“parents?”scribbled in black ink.

Looks like Mr. Alpha had just as much luck finding out who they were as I had. That search was one I gave up on long ago. Whoever they were, they made it clear that they wanted nothing to do with me from the moment I was born. The next page I turn to has multiple words written, each followed by a question mark.

‘Human? Fated? Miracle?’

Each word makes less sense than the one above it. I’m still flipping through the pages when the study door flies open.

“Someone’s not where they’re supposedto be.”

Thane

I had thought taking her on a run would’ve terrified her. Instead, she matched my howl with one of her own and outright laughed at the whole thing like some lunatic.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, she had the audacity to look at me like I was something other than a murderous animal who could tear her into a hundred little pieces in a matter of seconds. Like I was someone with a soul. Someone she felt safe with. And the worst part about it was that for a moment, I almost believed it myself.

The mark’s influence has grown dangerous. It’s twisting my perception of her. Making me see her as more than just my pet. But I refuse to be controlled by some bond.

I’ll make sure she learns to fear me. To obey me.

Chapter 14

“Alpha would be very disappointed to find out his pet has been snooping around in his study, don’t you think?” The werewolf leader shuts the door and locks it behind him as his eyes narrow on my chest, rising and falling with each labored breath.

As he prowls forward like a beast of prey, closing in on the desk separating us, I retreat as much as possible, pressing my back against the wall.

“It’s Troy, right?” I try to keep my voice steady, but I know he can sense my discomfort and is probably getting off on it.

“Good to know I made an impression on you,” he purrs with a predatory look that makes my insides knot.

“How could I forget the pervert who ordered me to take off my clothes?” I counter with a warning glare.

“I’m not a pervert, human. Simply an animal with a specific set of needs.”

My eyes dart around the room, looking for something to defend myself with, but the best I can come up with is the stapler sitting on the desk between us. I lunge for it, despiteknowing it won’t do much good, but the werewolf catches my hand in his before I can get a hold of it.

“Nice try,” he sneers, yanking my upper body across the desk.

My hips slam into the wood, and I release a hiss as the pain ripples through my bones. I try to use my free hand to push against the top of the desk, but he clutches the back of my head, forcing me closer to him.

“Release me, you sick fuck!”

The sight of me struggling only seems to ignite twisted excitement in his dark eyes as a laugh rumbles in the back of his throat, sending a shiver down my spine.

“I knew you were a wildcat,” he breathes, slamming my head into the desk with so much force, my skull feels like it’s splitting in two.

Sharp pain immediately radiates through my head, and when I try lifting it back up, a wave of dizziness knocks into me, blackening my vision. It feels like I’m caught in a cyclone, and as the room spins around me, I cling to the desk, trying to center myself.

“You’re going to fucking pay for that!” I spit blindly, unable to make out where he’s at now.

Suddenly, my hair feels like it’s being ripped from my scalp as my head is yanked back, and within seconds, both of my arms are pinned behind my back. I aggressively twist my body, trying to break free, but the leather of his belt tightens around my wrists, cutting into my skin.

“Let’s say we make a deal, Wildcat.” The smell of whiskey lingers on his breath as he presses himself against my backside, pushing me harder into the desk. “I won’t tell Alpha what you’ve been up to, and you don’t scream.” His stubble scrapes across the side of my face as I thrash around like a fish caught ina net. “I like when they put up a fight. It makes it more fun that way.”

Just as I’m about to release the scream crawling up my throat, he clamps his hand over my mouth, running his tongue up the back of my neck like he’s hoping to taste my fear. A metallic tang coats my tongue, and I realize now that blood has been running down my face from where my forehead must’ve split open. But my head injury is the least of my problems. With my wrists bound and my mouth covered, there’s no hope for me now. No one is coming to save me. I’m at the Devil’s mercy, and as he draws in a deep breath, making every inch of my skin crawl with disgust, I know my fate is sealed.

If I had just stayed in my room, I wouldn’t be in this situation. Though, maybe that’s not true. From the moment I saw his eyes wander down my body that first day, I should’ve known he would try something like this. Even then, I could see it in his eyes. The way he saw me as a challenge. Someone to claim like a trophy to add to his collection of victims. Men like him are the worst kind of monsters, and as the warmth of his touch seeps into me like a poison, I find myself wishing I was caught in the clutches of a different monster. One with moonlight eyes and a bad temper.
