Amelia turned to a stunning gown of russet. “Charlotte! How did you…”
A tip of auburn hair. “Your Mr Cadwalader here. He deduced our little ruse and invited me and… Oh, the waltz is about to start and I have a partner. We will talk soon, yes?”
Amelia nodded and clasped her hands. “I should like that very much.”
“Good. I must dash as my dance is with…” A frown appeared. “Have you heard of a Prince Cleavers of Hapsburg?”
With a bite of lip, Amelia shook her head but as Charlotte twisted away, she turned to Hugh. “Should I tell her?”
“Well, it could be true for all we know.” He caressed a curl in her hair. “Anything is possible tonight, my love.”
“And how will it end? This perfect night?”
Hugh drew her near. “I’d propose we go somewhere to gather our thoughts. Find some calm after the storm.” He winked. “’Tis on the other side of London but I know the perfect place.”
Amelia smiled and brought her palm to his chest, her warrior and her gentleman.
“But before that…” Hugh proffered an arm. “Waltz with me? Though I warn you, I shall be scandalous and hold you most close.”
She laid a hand upon his sleeve of amber silk. “I’d expect nothing less of the Scandalous Hugh Cadwalader.”
Lips curved to that sinful smile. “From henceforth, we shall be scandalous together, my beloved Amelia.” And with that…and a waggle of eyebrow, Hugh led her to the dancefloor.
