Amelia met Hugh’s eyes and understood the reason for his question.
“So what if,” she murmured, “Roberts is also blackmailing Sir Edmund over his wife’s sickness. Information in return for a secret kept.”
Lady Kemble shook her head. “Never. He is too smart.”
Hugh frowned. “I confess it still leaves a host of unanswered questions but… We must at least consider it.”
She shook her head more vehemently. “I’ll not believe it, Hugh.”
Amelia bit her lip.
