Charlotte chortled. “I wish I’d gone for that interview if the governess perquisites included roses and theatre trips. Shall I place them in your hair?”

“I’d better do it myself,” she murmured as she twisted. “These hairpins can be quite lethal.”

They fastened the last bud to her bodice and then primped and groomed until no more could be done and the trot of horses’ hooves could be heard coming to a halt on the cobbles outside.

“Prince Charming is here,” said Charlotte, misting the small window with her breath. “In a green town coach pulled by four handsome bays. Have a grand time.”

“Thank you, Charlotte. For everything.” Amelia smiled and crossed to the hook on the wall for her velvet cloak, her habitual composure a little…flustered.

But this was work. Nothing more.
