Emerson did as instructed, swinging her feet over the bed so they were dangling off the side.

“I was right; you’re about eight and half weeks, and you have a healthy baby growing in there, alongside another healthy baby.”

Emerson’s eyes bugged, as did mine.

“Sorry, doc. Say that again, please.”

“Two babies. You’re having twins,” Dr. Humphries smiled as she reached over to take some paper which the monitor had spat out. “Emerson, you have two babies growing inside your womb. I couldn’t quite see it from your belly exam, but from the transvaginal there are definitely two fetuses, and two very strong heartbeats.”

She handed us the printouts, pointing to a fuzzy blob. “See? Right here.”

I think I blinked, but I couldn’t be sure.

“Are you sure?” Emerson whispered.

Dr. Humphries nodded. “Yes, absolutely. When you come back next time, it’ll be much easier to see them.”

Two. Two babies.

My tears started up again. “Twins, Luck.” I leaned over to kiss her.

She wiped my wet face with her palms, laughing as she did. “Oh my God, I’m going to have three crybabies to deal with now, aren’t I?”

“No. I’ve got seven months to lock this shit down,” I sniffed.

She smiled softly. “No, don’t you dare. I love it.”

She kissed me quickly before jumping off the bed and walking behind the screen to get changed. I looked down at the photo in my hand, my heart beating so heavily I thought it might burst. My eyes watered over again.

“Doc, can you show me again please?” My voice broke as I asked.

Her fingers pointed to a big blob in the middle. “This wavy bit here is one baby, and this wavy bit here is another.”

“Thanks Doc. Got it.” I definitely didn’t have it.

I stood up as Emerson emerged, fully dressed again. Dr. Humphries handed us some printouts and leaflets.

“I’ve booked your next appointment for three weeks’ time, and here’s some literature for you to read before then. It tells youwhat to expect and what you should be doing. My number is on there if you need anything at all.”

Emerson took them and put them in her bag. “Thank you.”

I opened the door and held my hand out for her to take. We walked out of the office, into the elevator, down to the lobby and back into the sunshine without saying one word. We were halfway down the block before I couldn’t take it any longer and spun her around to face me, startling a passerby.

“Emerson?” I pulled her sunglasses down her nose so I could look into her eyes, which were wide with shock. “Sweetheart, are you okay?”

“Twins, Drew. Twins.Twins.”

I cupped her face in my hands. “I know, babe, but we can do it. We trust the universe, right?”

She smiled at me, her perfect, beautiful smile which shot me straight in the heart. “Yes, we do.”

“Good, and as long as we have each other, everything will be okay. I love you so fucking much.” I kissed her nose, pushing her sunglasses back up. “Now let’s get the fuck home, because you have a promise to uphold.”

She laughed loudly and practically dragged me up the street.

My future, carrying our future.
