Like a hot pan had been shoved in my pocket-

Capture everything.

My heart slammed against my ribs. Slippery fingers fumbled for the scalding journal. Secrets of my demented mind spoken in confidence about dark desires. Hopes of saving a soul that hadn’t existed.

But this one did.

And this one deserved it.

“I get it now,” I sobbed, my lip curling in defiance. “You won’t leave me, I won’t let you.”

With that, I opened journal-

The weight of her in my lap dissipated, her form dissolving into a fine red mist, tunneling into the pages.

It snapped shut.

She vanished.

Screaming.

I couldn’t stop screaming.

What had I done?

My blood stained hands grabbed hopelessly at the little book, ripping it open and smearing the pages with red- so much red-

Was the water washing it away?

No, the blood was seeping into the pages, spreading and deepening. The center of my chest throbbed and throbbed where our bond had frayed like a cut wire the moment she hit the pavement.

I growled at the bloody journal, the ache in my eyes radiating through my skull and the bond-

Echoes of my voice screaming her name, tires squealing- the scene replaying in shades of red.

My breath caught.

Red mist poured out of the pages, swirling into a familiar shape in my lap. Cold shock paralyzed me as the mist solidified, her weight returning. The rain pelted harder, red washing away to reveal pale skin.

I felt it then.

The bond erupted like a lightning bolt, branching through every inch of my being- my soul- and branded it.

Hot tears breaking free, I bent over her.

“Heaven isn’t allowed to have you, Angel. You’remine.”

Those pretty lips parted on a gasp.

“Courtney?” I whimpered. Adrenaline wore thin, the strain I’d put on myself came thundering back with a vengeance. Panting like I’d run for miles, I cupped her face as she coughed a gush of blood.

“Fuck,fuck.”

Pins and needles in my fingers and toes, a prickling sensation at the base of my spine. I had minutes at most, seconds at worst before the cost of using so much power caught up to me. Her hand grasped the journal on her chest as another wet cough splattered blood on my shirt.

“Hang in there, Angel, stay with me,” I begged, stumbling to the shoulder. I hit the grass and my knees gave out, the taste of metal filling my mouth. Courtney whimpered. Somehow, I managed to fall back, cushioning her impact.

“Ollie,” she rasped.
