“I don’t deserve to die.I am doing this for our kind.”Rance asked him how he thought that was working.“You’re nothing but a pussy.Christ, when I think about how you’ve lived your life, I want to puke. You should have been making the humans cattle for us instead of mating with them. She’shuman, isn’t she?Christ. That’s just great. My sister-in-law is a human being and a worthless one at that.”
Kimmy felt the power in her hands and stepped up to David.Putting her hand around his neck, she cried out from the evilness of him but continued to hold him there. As his head began to splinter away from his shoulders, she smiled at him.
“You’ll die, so I don’t have to be afraid of you anymore.”When the chains no longer held their prey, she watched his face. The look of shock on his face was more than she could have hoped for, and she was glad that she’d been able to do it.The screams coming from him were enough to wake the dead, and she was happy for it.“You will be no more, your ashes will spread far and wide, so that no one has to be fearful of you getting away again.”

The wounds on Kimber’s hand healed almost immediately. She had bits of blood on her from David. It was from his latest victim. It made it easier for them to find her when they tasted the blood.By the time they got to her, she was gone. The poor woman had suffered a great deal and wouldn’t have lived much longer if David had been able to continue.Kimber was glad that it was over for her because it looked as if she had suffered by his knives for hours. She was crying when Brew asked to speak to her.
“You’re going to be pissed off, and I find that I don’t care.I don’t know what you were doing, talking to him like he was going to be able to talk himself out of his punishment.”He said he was gathering facts.“You have enough of those. He’s been killing since he was five years old.And you know that.”
“I know that the paperwork says that I don’t see a child killing the way that they said that he did.”Rance stood behind Kimber when Brew started pacing.“I would have killed him.Now it will go down in the books that he was killed by you.People are going to ask questions.”
“I don’t care. You have no idea what it’s been like for me living with him hanging around my shoulders all the time.I thought he was going to convince you to let him go.I couldn’t allow that.He would have killed everyone in this household and then gone on a killing spree that would have ruined this little town.He wouldn’t have shown any mercy either.”Brew asked Kimber if she really thought that he’d let that happen.“I was afraid for you all.I told you, had he been set free in your house, he would have been able to kill you.You invited him in knowing the type of monster that he is.”
“I would have died saving you.”She said that there was no reason for it now that it was over.“All right. It’s over.I’m not happy with the way things turned out, but I’m glad that he’s dead. Now the book will fill out for all the deaths that are associated with him. There will be more than we can count, I’m afraid.”
“I am as well.”The staff cleaned up the ash that was left behind. The chains disappeared as well because they were no longer needed.Even as they sat around the living room, the room that had held so much drama from before, they acted like nothing had happened.
Rance felt such a relief that he had to hold onto the back of the couch in order to go and sit down.He was gone. His brother was finally out of his life, and he owed it all to his mate. She had gone to the house knowing that she could kill him, and she did.He would be forever grateful to her for as long as he lived. And he felt like it would be much longer now that David was out of the picture.
Having declined dinner, they were headed out the door when Rance turned to his good friend. He hugged him tightly, telling him in that way other than professing his love for him. Then he stood back to allow Kimber to do the same.
“You need to make us your seconds.Myself for Calla and Kimber for you.It would be balanced out, and I think she’s already proven that she’s up for the job.”They all four laughed.“She’ll protect you better because she knows the rules. And that will help you a great deal in the future.”
“I’ll consider it.”Brew looked at Kimber.“Thank you for tonight.I don’t know what I would have done had you not been here, but I’m glad that it’s over.”
“I got your back. And you should really consider us to be your seconds.I know that you know I will protect you with my life, but with the new baby coming along, you’re going to need someonearound that can protect the three of you.”He asked her about children.“We’ve not talked about it yet.But when we do, I’ll let you know what we decide.”
“I have a feeling that you saved more than my household today, Kimber. You’ve been dealing with David for some time now, and it’s finally caught up with him.I’m glad. However, next time I tell you I have it, believe me.”She said she’d try.“I suppose that’s all I can hope for today.
The two of them walked home and went into the living room.Kimber told him she was exhausted, and he found that he was as well. They’d both been under a great deal of pressure lately, and now that it was over, they both needed their rest.As soon as they got to their room, the two of them stripped down and got into bed.Kimber was asleep before he was able to get comfortable in the bed.Hearing from Brew so soon after leaving him, he laughed a little when he answered him that he was still awake.
“We’ve decided to let the two of you be our seconds.I think that with Kimber being my second, it will catch a great many people off guard, and they’ll underestimate her. They’ll only do that the one time before she hands them their asses.I know that I won’t do that again.”Rance told him what they’d talked about with babies.“You don’t want any? That’s not usual, is it?I thought that all vampires wanted to procreate.”
“She said she might change her mind later, but for now, we’ve decided that we don’t want any children around.I think the two of us like our solitude much better than having children around all the time.”Brew said he could understand that.“You’ll have to look into David’s estate for me.I don’t know what he had, but we’ve talked it over, and we’d like for whatever it is to go into the vampire fund for wayward vampires. That way, someone will get some use out of it sooner rather than later. We have no use for the money anyway.”
“All right, I can do that.Is there anything else you wish for me to do?I’m in a generous mood right now and would do just about anything for the two of you.”He told him.“I can do that too.It would be my pleasure to make sure that your parents’ money is given out the same way.If you don’t mind me asking, why has it taken you so long to decide what you wanted done with it?”
“I never believed what David said about them dying the way that they did.I never touched it for fear that it would be one more thing that David would want something from me for.Understand?”He said that he did and would be happy to do that for him.“Thank you.So much.I have a list of things that Kimber told me about tonight about David that you’ll have to see if it’s in the book. He’s been doing things that have given us a bad name for a very long time.”
“I’m looking at the book now. It’s still filling out names that are associated with him in their death.I didn’t know that it would also tell me that they were shifter or human. It’s good to know.I haven’t decided to go to the police yet. This will solve a lot of open cases for them if I do.But I’d tell a shifter that might be involved so that they can finally have peace for the family. The humans, too, I suppose.”He told him he’d do it a little at a time and only with the humans.“I can see that. After a while, it won’t matter if I give them lots of names or not. They’ll be happy to have the cases solved.I hope.”
“I would if I was a cop.I was one for a while, and getting cases off my table would be great.”After talking a bit more, they closed the connection.Getting up after putting Kimber in a deeper sleep, he made his way to his office.
There were things that he wanted to get done, and when she was around, he was too distracted to get anything finished up in a timely manner. Not that he minded. He loved having her around. After getting his computer opened up for business, he found himself drifting off, thinking about Kimber.
What she’d done tonight could have gotten her killed. But she’d done it so fast, getting the job done, she told him that he’d had no time to react.Once David was dead, gone from this earth, he could only stand in awe of her and her magic. What surprised him was that she didn’t need any help from either him or Brew. She’d seen a job that needed to be done and did it.He loved that about her.
If he were honest with himself, he couldn’t think of a single thing that he didn’t love about her. From the freckles across her nose to the way she painted her toenails different colors depending on what she was wearing. He thought that she had the sexiest feet of any feet he’d ever seen, and he found that he was surprised by that.He normally wasn’t a feet sort of person.
After going over his investments, he worked on Kimber’s money. She’d asked him to invest in some of the things that he invested in, and he was happy to do that for her. Some of his investmentswere centuries old, while others were things that he had only just bought into.He was happy to invest in smaller companies. It had paid off well for him over the years, and he wasn’t afraid to take a chance on things like candle companies and such.
Just as the sun was coming up, he decided to go see if Kimber was all right. She would sleep the day away if he allowed her to be in the sleep with his magic.Taking the magic away, he was surprised when she continued to sleep. She must have needed it, he thought, and let her sleep until she wanted to wake up.
Wandering around the house, finding little things to do, he was glad that the house was looking more and feeling so much more like a home.He loved spending time here now and was glad that he’d been able to get a second chance from Kimber. He’d been an asshole around her, and he was surprised every day that she told him that she loved him.It was almost more than he thought he deserved from her.
It was nearly noon when she finally woke up.She felt so bad for sleeping so long, but he did notice that she looked better. Her cheeks were flushed, and even her hair seemed to be silkier. When she ate a big meal for her lunch, he felt better for letting her sleep for so long. She seemed to be coming around to being his mate in all things, and he was happy for that.
