"Gray Falcon, please, I can't do this with you. Besides, you walked away from me tonight while we were discussing my problems, and I don't recall asking you to come back here and kiss me."

"Áa,you did. I remember it well. You asked—no, you begged—me to make love to you over and over, and all night long."

"But, I can't. And, you know why. Were I to do this now, I would become married to you."

"So you would. Perhaps you should be shoving me away as I told you to do, not kissing me back, asking me for more."

"This is not fair. How can you expect me tonotkiss you back when I…when I…?"

"Did I not tell you to do all you can to keep me away from you, even if it is I who should approach you?"

"What you are doing is not 'approaching' me. When I awoke, you were already all over me."

"So it would seem."

"Seem?" She breathed out heavily. "Don't you understand? This is a serious problem I have. Of course, if you are going to kiss me like this, I am going to respond. How can I not?"

"Have you thought that perhaps I have a similar problem as you, and now, becoming aware of your passion for me, I, too, am unable to keep from making love to you?" He kissed her again in the same manner as before, and she responded likewise.

At last, she sighed and placed her arms around his neck, even knowing she shouldn't do it. But, what else could she do? It felt so good. Nonetheless, when she sensed his touch was roaming lower and lower, down her neck toward one of her breasts, she became alert. Yes, this was like being thrown a little bit of heaven, but where was it leading?

With a deep breath in, she asked, "Why are you doing this with me now?"

"I am trying to 'make memories' with you—memories you can bring back to mind in days yet to come. You are not cooperating with me very much, though."

"I am, too, cooperating…too much, I think." At last, she pushed him away. "It is wonderful, being held like this, but if I let you go further and it leads to sleeping with you, I would have to bear the consequences."

"So you would," he agreed.

"You are doing this purposely, aren't you? You are playing with me now. You know how much I love you, and you are doing this so—"

He didn’t get the chance to answer her accusation, nor was she able to finish her thought. Alas, footsteps below them announced an intruder, causing Gray Falcon to raise himself up, away from her. She watched as he grabbed hold of his spear, his gun and his bow and arrows, pulling them on quickly, his gun in his hand. Casually, he placed a finger to his lips, cautioning her to silence.

Then he rose up again and stalked away, crouching low over the ground. He moved so quickly, precious minutes had passed before Amelia was able to pull up her petticoats and grab hold of the knife she carried with her at all times.

She owned a gun, but it wasn't on her person, and she berated herself for coming here without her best self-defense weapon. It was still hidden within her lodge.

Shaking her head slowly, she vowed she would correct this mistake. This was a wild country. Never again would she leave her lodge without bringing adequate self-defense.
