She shivered.
Where the hell had he come from? Pressing a palm to her hammering heart, she sucked in a deep lungful and then exhaled a shaky breath.
“Salvokos,” Luc reminded her.
“I’m ignoring him,” she acknowledged between clenched teeth, careful to keep her back to the street.
“I see.”
And Nadia got the distinct impression that he did.
Lightning flashed, and the immediate, resounding thunder triggered her yelp.
Luc placed his palm against her cheek. Warmth flowed through her, calming her nerves and chasing away her aggravation.
How did he do that?
His mouth kicked up in a ghost of a smile. “Wait here.”
She tracked his cat-like grace as he strode to Sal’s Compensation Cruiser. Whatever words were exchanged were heated, but her boss quickly backed down, nodding with begrudging respect. His resentful gaze touched on her, and promised retribution hung in the space between them.
She wasn’t sure how things could possibly get worse at work, but they were about to.
But oh, to be a fly on the dashboard for their conversation, though!
Nadia barely restrained her impulsive desire to fling herself into Luc’s arms when he returned, both in welcome and in gratitude.
“What did you say to him?” she asked, tightening her grip on her bag.
“I told him hands off unless he wanted to lose the appendage which brings him the most pleasure.”
“You threatened to cut his dick off?” she squealed, incredulous and delighted at the same time.
“In a manner of speaking.”
The day was suddenly brighter, and Nadia laughed. The gathering storm clouds dissipated as mysteriously as they’d arrived.
Must be divine intervention.
His eyes sparkled as if she’d delighted him, and she had no idea why.
“Thank you, Luc.” Her amusement died as she recalled Sal’s surliness. “Do you suppose that will be the end of it? Should I worry about retaliation?”
Irritation flashed across his visage, and his barely banked annoyance raised doubts.
“It is done,” he stated flatly. “He will bother you no longer.”
Had she angered him with her concern? Or could his upset be on behalf of Sal’s behavior?
“Fair enough.” Switching to a more pleasant subject, she asked, “What are you doing here? I mean, it doesn’t seem like the part of town you frequent.”
“How do you know which areas I frequent, Nadia?”
“Well, I don’t, but you’re so…” She waved her hand up and down to indicate his stylish clothes.
“Are you saying this is the seedy side of town?”
She wrinkled her nose. “Kind of.”
