Daaaaaaaammmmmmn.
The beers found a new home on the floor by the bed, while Mike slipped beneath the covers and spooned against Killy’s back. Deeply asleep, did the man even know he shifted back more securely into Mike’s embrace?
Very softly, Mike hummed to his bedmate. He didn’t know where the words came from, and it took him a minute to realize he’d created new words for Trickster’sYou’ve Got You, the song he’d used for comfort when he’d lost everything.
He sang, though the man sleeping in his arms couldn’t hear him.
“You don’t need me
You don’t need anyone
But I’ve got you
I’ve got you
Lovers come and lovers go,
And they might have taken a toll
It doesn’t matter now while I hold you
Take some rest for your weary soul
Nothing in Heaven or Earth can touch you
While you’re lying in my arms
I won’t lie and try to use you
With my last breath I’ll protect you from harm
Best to keep a friend around you
Better than walking this world alone
Know the ecstasy of many a moment
Together on this Earth we’ll roam
I make no promises, but give you all
Take, take, take, I’ll never do
Or leave you standing there with nothing
So now rest easy, I’ve got you.”
No matter what Mike went through, Killian’s situation was a thousand times worse. Losing his mother, his brother, his band?
Mike brushed a kiss over the scar on Killian’s head.
Killian let out a breathy sigh. Did he have any idea he clutched Mike’s hand in his sleep?
Mike wriggled, getting more comfortable. Killian rolled onto his back but didn’t wake up. In his sleep the former rock star appeared far less troubled, though the years had begun showing prematurely on his face. Mike couldn’t take away the pain, the loss, but he could wrap his arms around Killian now, let the man use him for a pillow, and offer what comfort he could.
Sleep eluded him, so he sat vigil, patting Killian’s shoulder and soothing him when he moaned in his sleep.
Each time Killian settled down, breathing evenly once again. He’d been alone for far too long—both of them had, but Killian probably needed someone even more than Mike did.
