He holds the key ring up in front of me. “What? What did you do?”

“I took care of it.”

“You fixed my car?”

He nods. “Well, I had the auto shop do it. I’m not that skilled.”

“Sam, I don’t know what to say.”

“How about thank you?” He presses a kiss to the corner of my mouth.

“Thank you.” I shake my head. “It doesn’t seem like enough.”

“Like I said, I like taking care of you. I worked it out with them and got it cheaper. I know you wanted it back.”

I take the keys, the cold metal pressing into my palm. “I don’t know what I did to deserve you, but I’m really glad you’re here.”

“Me too.” He tucks a lock of hair behind my ear before brushing over my cheek. The look on his face is tender and full of love. “I should probably get back up to the barn.”

“I know.” I hug him to me, not wanting him to leave. I want more time, but I know Lina will be back soon. And I’ll have to scarf down dinner before she gets down here.

When he pulls back, I miss his warmth immediately. The way his strong arms wrap around me and hold me like I’m the most precious thing in his life.

“Sam?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you.”

He winks. “Anytime, darlin’.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

SAM

“I’ll take a beer, please.”

“You got it, sir,” the kid behind the counter says.

Obviously not a kid because he’s serving beer, but it feels like kids these days are getting younger and younger.

I pass over a twenty and tell him to keep the change.

I adjust the Loggers ball cap over my eyes and walk around the full stands as I head to the lawn beyond the outfield. Cheers and happy laughter filter to me.

I’ve missed nights like this. The sun setting over the mountains with a cool breeze blowing through. The first signs of fall are starting to settle over town. The crack of a bat echoes across as the crowds cheer.

Everyone from the ranch is cheering in the fields lining the outfield as our batter rounds the bases. A home run.

Hell, yeah.

I wave and smile to everyone as I try to find a spot to watch the game.

“Sam. Hi.”

Joey’s voice stops me in my tracks.

“Hey.”
