“Sort of?”
I grab the devilled egg container from the other end of the counter and present it to JJ.
“Take the cover off.”
He lifts it, both curious and hesitant. His eyes widen when he sets his eyes on what’s beneath. Brownies in the shape of half a boiled egg, with frosting where the yolk mixture goes.
“Wow,” he says. “Now that is not what I was expecting.”
“They’re so good!” I put the container down and pick one up. I offer it to him, and he takes the whole bite.
He moans, leaning against the counter, his eyes falling closed.
He licks his lips after swallowing. “Wow.”
“You said that already.”
“Wow,” he says again, and this time we both laugh. “That is good.”
“Yep.”
I pick one up and take the bite, scooting closer to JJ. We finish off the brownies, then we can hardly move.
“I am going to feel awful tomorrow,” he complains. “I should not be eating all this junk.”
“It’s the best part of getting drunk,” I say, tossing the egg container in the sink with the rest of them.
I’ll deal with cleaning them all tomorrow.
“Do you, uh… want to stay?” I ask.
“That’s why I’m here,” he smirks.
I just smile and take his hand, pulling him into my bedroom. We get undressed to our boxer briefs, and crawl into bed together. I lie with my head on his shoulder and my arm over his chest, brushing my fingers through the dark hair there. I can’t help but wonder if he’s going to panic again. He agreed to stay tonight, so maybe he won’t… but both times he’s been here before, he’s run out of here like his ass was on fire.
“So, Halloween is next week,” I say softly. “Do you have plans?”
“Nope,” he says, his voice low and tired.
“Audrey has to work, which means I get to take Noah out. One guess what he’s going as.”
He huffs a laugh. “What do I get if I’m right?”
“A kiss.”
“Hmm… what would Noah want to be for Halloween?” His fingers find my head, running through my hair gently. “Oh, I know. A race car driver.”
“Wow. I’m offended.”
JJ laughs as I try to push him away. He grabs me and pulls me on top of him like I weigh absolutely nothing. Our eyes meet. The tension spikes slightly. His fingers find the back of my head, running through my hair gently.
“Your hair is so soft,” he says.
“I use conditioner.”
JJ smiles. “You’re funny.”
“When I’m drinking.”
