"Just go. I promise not to maim anyone." Well, except for her for seeing Walsh like that.
By the time I turned back around, Beckett had found a towel to wrap around his body. I had to admit I was slightly disappointed.
Wait, what? Now was not the time for my libido to step into the driver's seat.
My body didn't care what I thought though. It had a mind of its own.
Fuck, I was in so much trouble.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
BECKETT
Things I didn't expect to happen to me this morning:
Getting confirmation that the dead body was in fact Lex Dunkin.
My boss calling me to take the day off because the brass wanted to meet with me tomorrow.
My partner calling shortly after that to say she was one step closer to solving the mystery of Anita's identity.
Walking out of the bathroom butt-ass naked to find two women in my bedroom. One of them being the woman whose identity I was trying to figure out.
Oh and the desire in Anita's eyes as they raked over my body.
Yeah, that last one was definitely the kicker.
"Uhhhhh." I cleared my throat. At least I now had a towel wrapped around my body, but it did nothing to cover my growing erection. Apparently being appreciated by this woman was a turn-on for me. "Is there a reason you broke into my house again? And who was that woman you were with?"
"Why, do you want to fuck her?" Anita glanced down at where my cock stood at attention.
Her staring at it wasn't helping. "Ah, nope. This definitely isn't for her." I wanted to facepalm my forehead. I hadn't meant to say that out loud. That wasn't to say I didn't mean it. Anita was attractive. Hands down the most beautiful woman I had ever laid my eyes on. I was sure if she smiled, she would knock a lot of men on their asses. But she wore a perpetual scowl and torture appeared to be her love language.
We were currently locked into a staring contest. Her stormy gray eyes refused to leave mine, and neither of us spoke. Despite wanting to know why she was here, I couldn't force the words out of my mouth after my last blunder. There was no telling what I would say.
I considered myself a confident man. Until I was in the room with Anita. Somehow she managed to obliterate my confidence and left me confused and unsure who I was.
Anita finally spoke, but what came out of her mouth surprised me.
"You need to tell your partner to back off. Nothing good ever comes to those who dig too deep."
My cock deflated. "Are you threatening my partner?" I didn't give a shit how attractive Anita was; no one threatened those I was close with.
"I don't make threats. I keep promises."
I crowded Anita's space. "If anything happens to Sylvia, I'll know who to look for."
"You could never find me."
It pissed me off that she was right. It also annoyed the hell out of me that being this close to her meant her scent filled my lungs. A slightly earthy smell that reminded me of a warm autumn breeze. It was a complete contradiction to her persona and not something I would've thought she would smell like.
"I would move mountains to protect those I care about."
Anita sneered. "And that's the difference between the two of us. You would move mountains where as I would scorch the earth."
Her response gave me pause. I always suspected she was dangerous, but she was basically confirming it right now.
I leaned close and whispered in her ear. I was playing with fire, but I couldn't find it in me to care. I was like a moth to a flame. I knew touching it would burn me, but I did it anyway. "There's no reason for either. Sylvia's innocent in all this. I'm the one you need to focus on."
