Kai Rí
request the honor...
Walking into the room, Kai went straight to the coffee pot and poured himself a mug of black, dark roast. Yes, he had his own special coffee, but he always started with a plain mug,
Kissing me on top of the head, he read the invitation aloud and questioned, “October?”
“October.”
“That gives us four months.”
“Yep.”
“To train?”
“Nope.”
“To prepare?”
“Nope.”
“Then why?”
Grinning so wide that the muscles in my cheeks were stretched as far as they could go, I said, “Because your future wife needs time.”
“For?
“I gotta figure out how to be a Queen.”
Pausing, I debated whether to give him the other reason. In the next breath, I threw caution to the wind and added, “And lose ten pounds.”
Kai’s expression turned deadly serious. He looked me right in the eye and stated, “You are perfect.”
“And you hit your head.”
“Yep. Twice.”
EPILOGUE
After Kai went to the firehouse, I continued editing the invitation, RSVP cards, and all the other goodies we needed to have reprinted for the Mating Ceremony when there was a soft, tentative knock at the door.
“We're closed.”
“It's me.”
“Nope.”
He got louder. “I brought tacos.”
In a blur of brown fur and slobber, Chewy materialized. “LET HIM IN!” Little man demanded.
“No.”
“If you don’t, I will. You know I can do it.”
“I know I’m gonna kick Zelda in the shins for giving you that Spell.”
“Just open the door, please.”
