Kai’s nostrils flared and his mouth tightened. Hollyn knew he was getting frustrated.

“Does it involve someone dying?”

“More like, we’re on the run from someone who wants to imprison Hollyn.”

Kai’s gaze met Hollyn’s once more. “Why would someone want to put you in prison? Are you two criminals?”

“Actually, Hollyn’s father is the criminal. He kept Hollyn locked away for years. With the help of her aunt, she escaped, but he won’t just let her go.”

“So, how does the medallion help the situation?”

Bertie looked up at Hollyn, and she nodded at her once more, but she surprised her with her next words.

“We’re really not quite sure how it will work, but we have to see if it will set her free.”

She hadn’t told Kai the whole truth, and Hollyn wasn’t comfortable with the consequences of keeping information from the pilot who was risking his life and didn’t even know it.

Maybe if she whispered, she could warn him exactly what they were up against without affecting him with her abilities. After all, most sirens only put men in a trance if they sang to them. She didn’t quite understand why any word from her seemed to have that effect. Yet, she needed allies. She needed him to understand. If she told him the entire story, he might genuinely want to help them.

She leaned toward him, pulled in a heavy breath, but at the sound of something breaking in the passenger area, froze her in place.

Kai’s eyes widened. “We’re not alone on this airplane.”

Chapter 5

KAI PUT THE PLANE INautopilot, turned toward the quiet but beautiful Hollyn, and said, “Stay here. This baby will fly itself on the trajectory I’ve set it, but if anything goes wrong, I won’t be far.”

He shoved his seat back before standing and slipping quietly into the passenger cabin. He heard a rustle from behind and turned in time to duck a punch flying at his head before jumping out of the way of a fist flying at his midsection. He stepped backward and nearly lost his balance on a passenger seat. He twisted away and shuffled back a few feet, raising his fists, ready to beat the shit out of this man who dared sneak on his plane.

“Who the hell are you? And how the hell did you get on my plane?”

The man was shorter than Kai, but he was bulkier with thick muscles in his upper body. Kai took in the dark-haired, busy mustached attacker, but he didn’t look the least bit familiar. Clearly, the guy was here for Hollyn, not Kai.

He ran down the aisle with a yell right at Kai, and as soon as he was close enough, he leapt into the air with his feet at Kai’s chest. It surprised Kai, but he managed to drop to his right between two seats, only getting grazed by the flying kick.

The dark-haired fighter landed on his feet and scrambled back toward Kai. With a tight grip, Kai managed to pull himself up and over two seats, continuing to make his way back toward the cockpit. Once he had some distance between them, he regained his footing in the aisle once more and crouched, ready to put an end to whatever this was.
