He nodded quickly and focused his eyes forward once again. “Yes, I’m surprised you aren’t already back there. I’m truly baffled how you’ve managed to stay free for so long. And while you’re at it, why don’t you take your pigeon with you. She’s getting on my nerves.”
“How thick is your skull, flyboy? I’m a seagull!”
Hollyn had to admit his words stung a little. The way he’d said it had made her seem less than intelligent. For just a moment, she’d thought they’d been connecting, maybe he even found her attractive, but then, he’d turned around and called her stupid.
“Okay. I’m usually a few steps ahead of my father, but honestly, I didn’t see this coming. We were so careful. I really don’t know how he found us.”
“Sounds like someone tipped him off.”
Once again, Hollyn had to acknowledge that Kai had a better handle on the situation than she did. “You talk like you’ve had experience with this stuff.”
He gave a low laugh. “More than my fair share.”
Hollyn waited for him to elaborate, but when he didn’t say anything more, she figured that was the end of the conversation.
She turned and said, “Well, I guess we’ll see if I can get anything useful out of our prisoner.”
As she approached the last row of seats where they’d tied up their attacker, his chin lifted and his gaze locked onto her as a grin widened across his face. He was clearly still mesmerized. That was good, at least. The problem was that she’d never actually used her ability to manipulate anyone.
She’d seen her mother use her song on her father in order to give Hollyn a chance to escape, but Hollyn had vowed never to use her powers to hurt anyone, and she’d stuck to it.
Yet, this wasn’t really meant to hurt anyone. If anything, this could save people. At least Hollyn could help if she could ask the right questions.
She cleared her throat and asked, “Do you know who I am?”
“Yes. You’re the boss’s runaway daughter.”
Hmmm.Clearly, he worked for Hollyn’s father. “Did he send people other than you to find me?”
“Of course. He sent five people that I know of, and he promised a reward to the person who returned you alive.”
So far, everything tracked with what Hollyn knew her father would do. But a sudden thought occurred to her. She glanced all around the cabin.
“Are there any others on board the plane?”
“No. I was the only one who she told.”
“Who told you?”
“The witch.”
He was talking about the source that Kai supposed there had to have been. Clearly, he was right. “Did she have a name?”
He shrugged. “Probably. She didn’t tell me.”
“Okay. What did she tell you exactly?”
“Where to find the plane you would be flying out on.”
Hollyn felt chills down her spine. Someone really was a step ahead of them, and they didn’t know who it was. “Did you tell anyone else the name of the plane?”
“No. I didn’t want to share the reward.”
Okay. That was good.As long as Kai hadn’t logged a flight plan, they were not likely to be followed to Saint Helena, the place in the Atlantic Ocean they hoped to find the amulet.
“The only person I told was the boss. After I overheard the pilot and you discussing where you were going, I sent him the coordinates of your destination.”
Oh, shit! This was bad.
