“Okay,” Emily said as she naturally stepped into Alex’s space to give her a hug. Alex was only an inch or two shorter than her, and Emily brushed a light kiss against Alex’s cheek as she pulled away. “Text me. I don’t start my new job for another few weeks, so I’m free as a bird.”
“I will.” Alex lingered, like she didn’t really want to leave. “Okay. I better go.”
Emily watched her walk away, and she was already looking forward to seeing her again.

Alex had taken every extra shift she could get in the last week, not because she particularly wanted to, but she was trying to stockpile a bit of money before college started back. She’d only be working probably two nights a week then, which didn’t make it easy to get through the week money wise.
So here she was again, on a Thursday night, her fourth night in a row working, her feet achy from standing behind the bar for hours on end.
But all it took to cheer her up was seeing Emily walk in. She wore black shorts and a dressy red tank top that caught the lights as she came in, a smile on her lips when she caught Alex watching her.
“Hey,” Alex said from behind the bar. “Can I get you a drink?”
“Gin and tonic please. Are you on break soon?”
Alex checked her watch. “About twenty minutes,” she said with a sad smile.
“I’ll be at one of those tables over there,” she said point to the left of the dance floor. “Come find me.”
“I will,” Alex said as she finished making Emily’s drink and slid it across the bar to her. “On the house.”
Emily thanked her before she weaved her way through the crowd and found one of the last empty tables along the wall.
The next twenty-minutes went by at an agonizingly slow pace despite being busy. When she finally got her break, she made a quick trip to the restroom before moving through the crowd and found Emily coming her way.
“Can I steal you for a dance?” Emily asked, a smile on her lips, and she looked absolutely radiant, her hair straight tonight, falling a few inches below her shoulders.
“Yes. I’d love to.”
As they made their way onto the dance floor, Alex could see Maria watching them out of the corner of her eye, throwing her a wink from across the room.
Maria had seen it from the first night, and she mentioned it almost every time that Alex had seen her since.
‘How’s your girlfriend,’ she’d ask, and each time, Alex would tell her that Emily was not her girlfriend.
Maria loved teasing her. Except when everything blew up with her last ex. Then she was just a really good friend who listened to Alex pour her heart out, tears and all.
Now, she was back to having fun again.
Emily had an extra bit of confidence in her step tonight, and Alex was loving it. Maybe, it had something to do with the fact that they’d slept together. Maybe, there was a bit of sexual tension before.
Who was she kidding? Their first few dances were full of sexual tension. The air had practically been sparking with electricity.
There might not be that shyness, that careful push and pull, but there was still plenty of chemistry, and Alex couldn’t remember ever having this kind of connection with someone when she was dancing.
What she had with Maria was what she thought was the best she would ever do.
This was that and more.
There was that romantic element to it. Each touch, each seductive gaze, each sway of their hips. It just added to that chemistry, and Alex didn’t think she could get enough of it.
They stayed out for another song, but that ended way too soon, and Alex knew her break was nearly over.
“I have to get back,” Alex said over the hum of the crowd.
“Come by my place when you’re off?”
