Nathan's hand touches my lower back as he walks up beside me, searing me with heat.
“See, I told you they’d love it.” Yes, he did. I never knew how grateful I’d be to have him help. It would have been lonely without him.
He holds out his fist for Ethan before grabbing hold of Charlotte and lifting her off her feet.
“Mine,” Ethan says as Nathan lowers her back to her feet, and my breath catches when he puts his hand on her stomach. She doesn’t even flinch.
“What the fuck? When I did that the other day, you snapped my head off,” I say incredulously.
That takes the absolute cheesecake.
“Well, I figure today everyone gets a free pass, but after this, it is by invitation only,” she replies.
I mean, I respect what she’s saying, it’s her body. But I’m her best friend, her ride or die. Ethan whispers that he hopes she doesn’t mean him. She gives him a quick kiss and tells him, of course not.
I let out a loud huff and cross my arms.
“Bloody hell, Vi.” She grabs my hand and holds it on her belly. See, I knew she loved me, still her favourite.
“Don’t swear around them,” I retort and realise my slip up, and I just hope no one else heard that.
Nathan lets out a chortle of laughter. “You know bloody isn’t a swear word, right?”
I don’t have an answer to that, so I do the only thing I can think of, and that's to flip him off, which only makes him laugh harder.
“How is that any better?” he questions.
It’s good to see nothing has changed regarding being around our friends.
“They can’t see it, for one thing.”
He blows me a kiss, but I also see the wicked gleam in his eyes, and if I can, surely they can too.
“You’re an arsehole,” I say.
He chuckles, Nathan fucking chuckles. “Now, who’s swearing?”
I think we might be having our real first fight as a couple. No, wait, we’re not even a couple. Fuck, I don’t know what we are.
“Come on, you two, I don’t want the godparents being at each other’s throats, especially not today. Can you maybe call a cease-fire today for me?”
Any worries I had over my relationship status evaporate as her words register with me.
“Did you hear that? We’re going to be godparents,” Nathan says, wrapping me in his big strong arms, and I can’t help myself as I hug him back. Something feels so right about being enveloped in his embrace.
Until I remember we’re not alone. “Put me down, you idiot,” I say playfully.
I look between Charlotte and Ethan, suddenly feeling thirsty, clearing my throat.
“Are you serious?” I ask, which is ridiculous, seeing as Nathan just repeated it.
When they both nod with huge smiles, all my emotions surface, and I burst out crying.
“Shit, are you okay?” Char asks, stepping forward and pulling me into a hug, her rounded belly between us.
It takes me a moment to get myself under control as I try to fan my face with my hand.
“I’m fine, happy tears. You caught me off guard, is all. I love you,” I say to my best friend, hoping she knows how much this means to me.
