“Fuck, could you drive any slower, Grandpa?”

Crossing my arms, I can’t stop bouncing my knee, my anxiety levels through the roof.

“I’m driving the limit, Vi. Besides, I don’t think Lottie will be impressed if you end up in hospital, too, but for completely different reasons, do you?”

I snap my head to his. “Of course not, but I’m her birthing partner, and she’s in labour.”

Nathan grabs my knee and squeezes. “I know, Tink, and I’ll get you there, but it will be in one piece, okay?”

He’s right, but I’m just so nervous for her. When she leaves hospital, she’ll be a mum, and I’ll be a godparent.

“Ethan is with her, don’t worry, she’s in good hands.”

He turns his palm up, and I link my fingers with his. “I know you’re right. It’s just so overwhelming.”

Pulling my hand to his mouth, he kisses the back of my knuckles.

“I can’t believe we’ll finally get to meet them,” he says with a wistful look.

“Me either. I wonder who they’ll look like?”

Because I’ll be honest, those 3D scans scared the absolute shit out of me. I know what I will not be doing when I have kids.

Air catches in my throat. Kids? Do I want kids?

I glance at Nathan and then back at the road.

“I hope they're tenacious like their mum and smart like their dad.”

Nathan smiles. “That’s a given.”

My phone rings, causing me to yelp. My fucking nerves are shot.

“Hello, Ethan, is Charlotte okay? I’m on my way. Tell her to keep her legs closed until I get there, okay?”

His deep laugh echoes down the phone.

“She’s fine but wants to know if you can grab her a caramel cream Frappuccino.”

I let out a deep breath. “Yeah, of course. Did you want a coffee?”

“I knew I loved you. Yes, please, Vi, the canteen here is a little lacking.”

Nathan looks over, smiling.

“Okay, we’ll go by the drive-thru and see you in about twenty minutes.”

“K, see you then.” I swipe to end the call and drop my phone into my lap.

“Starbucks it is,” Nathan says.

“You heard that, then?”

He nods, laughing at me. “You had your phone on speakerphone.”

I poke out my tongue. “I’m nervous, okay?”

He grabs my hand again. “I know, Tink, I wasn’t taking the piss.”
