“No shit? And they haven’t moved on them themselves?”
“Nope. Not enough manpower to move on them. Not like what we have,” Storm tells me.
“Fuck, that has to feel like shit. Knowin’ one of your own is there, and there’s nothin’ you can do about it,” I say, shaking my head. That’s what makes me glad to have a son. He’s not a small man by any means and can handle himself if the need arises. I made damn sure he had that in place for him. The rest of his life? Well, that’s on him. At first, I wanted him to be a part of this club, but the more I was around, the more I saw that he didn’t need to be. He was better than this. He has a brighter future than what I had.
“You still don’t want Christian to patch in?” Bane asks me. I shake my head.
“No. He has a life outside this club. It’s good for him. I don’t think the man has a killer bone in his body. He didn’t get much from me in that department,” I tell him.
“Yeah, you’re probably right. He isn’t into this shit,” he adds.
“He’s good where he is. He makes a good livin’ doin’ his uptight accountantin’ shit.”
“You don’t like what he does?”
“He’s a fuckin’ accountant, Bane.”
“So he’s good with numbers. That isn’t a bad thing,” he tells me. I shake my head. Of all the things I could have raised, he's an accountant. I’ll give him that, though. He is good at what he does. It just surprises me that that’s what he wanted to do with his life. How he got a girl like Mylah is beyond me. They are complete opposites.
“No. It’s not, I guess. Just wish he was more like me than his mom.”
“You seen her lately?” I shake my head.
“No. She came to visit me once. Said she heard I was locked up again and reminded me why she left me in the first place. I’m not all that sure why she came to begin with.”
“How long has it been since you saw her?”
“At least six years before that visit.”
“And Christian?”
“He talks to her off and on. They don’t have the best relationship. I don’t even know why they talk to begin with.” Just as I say that the door opens, she walks in. I can’t believe she came here. I can’t believe we were just talking about her and now here she is.
“Speak of the devil. Damn, she looks good, Tide.” That comes from Bane as he eyes her up and down.
“Never said the woman was ugly,” I tell him as Beth walks toward me. Her eyes are bright, just like they were the day she came to see me.
“Hey,” she says cheerfully as she takes the empty seat next to me.
“What are you doin’ here?”
“Heard you were out.”
“And?”
“Don’t be like that, Tide. I heard you were out and wanted to see for myself.”
“You talked to Christian.”
“He told me.”
“What are you two best friends now?” I ask her. She looks at me strangely before shaking her head.
“You know I’m trying with him.”
“You shouldn’t have left him to begin with.”
“I know I messed up, Tide, but I’m trying here.”
