Sunshine stares blankly at my house, eyebrows raised. “Huh. This isn’t what I was expecting. At. All.”

“What? Why not?” I ask, genuinely curious. I take a moment and try to see what he’s seeing.

“I didn’t expect it to be so… modern,” he mutters, walking up the short steps.

I unlock the front door and motion for him to step inside, sighing sadly when there’s no creak to greet me.

“Why am I going first?” he asks, pausing cautiously right outside the door like I’m about to lead him to his doom.

“Because I’m being polite.”

“That sounds an awful lot like the beginning of a horror movie,” he says, but steps inside anyway. “No, you go first into the dark house. No one is home. Do not worry. Don’t mind the ghosts. They aren’t violent.”

He pauses his ridiculous muttering and gapes with wide eyes at the openness of the home I had built. He looks from the large charcoal couch to the black steel staircase to the dark kitchen, taking it all in with his mouth open wide in shock.

“Thisreallyisn’t what I was expecting,” he says in quiet awe. “It’s so modern and warm. And so many windows. How the fuck do you sleep?”

Everything about this house is open and airy. It used to be exactly what I wanted. Before I met Sunshine, it was perfect. Now, it kind of feels like a placeholder in a life I no longer live. The funeral home feels more like home now. I don’t know if I can go back to the way it was before.

He walks past the couch and into the kitchen, fingers brushing along the kitchen island.

“I love it,” he says finally, his shoulders lowering and his scent shifting from anxious to settled.

My alpha growls in pride at being able to soothe my omega so easily.

“What’s upstairs?” he asks, teasing curiosity in his voice.

“My bedroom,” I reply, my voice deeper than I intended.

“Can I see it?” he questions, a sly grin teasing the corners of his lips.

“Mmm,” I hum, unable to use words like normal. I nod my head so he understands. The thought of Sunshine being anywhere near my bed has my alpha putting all kinds of interesting ideas into the front of my brain.

I want his scent to cover everything. I want him to stay here forever, basking in the warmth that I unknowingly built for him. I want the feeling of Sunshine to linger after he leaves, soI don’t have to feel so alone anymore. I want to leave with him when he goes.

No.

Not want.

Need.

Ineedto be with him forever.

He must smell my pheromones blasting from me because his smile stretches wide across his face as he moves slowly toward the staircase.

I growl low in the back of my throat, anticipating his next move.

My omega wants to be chased.

He bolts up the stairs, sneakers squeaking and peachy ass bouncing as he races to the top. My cock twitches in response.

I’m not about to let him win that easily.

With a wicked laugh, I shift into my phoenix form, my wings spreading wide as I take flight. Light like a flickering flame fills the entire house. I soar up to the loft, beating him by a mere second.

“Wow,” he whispers, taking in my shifted form.

I preen at his attention and shift back, my wings folding back into my body.
