My head was resting on his bicep, and his fingers were running along my spine.
“How long have you had that dream?” I asked.
“Since the moment I laid eyes on you in that hospital room,” he said.
“What took you so long?” I teased.
He chuckled, “You said it. It wouldn’t have meant as much.”
A yawn escaped my control.
“Let’s get you to sleep.” He winked as he pressed a kiss on my temple, then shifted us so he could grab the covers, and then he pulled them over us.
Once he had them in place, he pulled me tighter into his body.
My head rested right over his heart. I whispered, “You know, I always sleep on the side you’re lying on.”
He chuckled, “That’s fine when your dad is here ‘cause he’s closer to the front door than you are. But with me, you're always going to be the farthest from entry.”
I frowned, “Why?”
“‘Cause someone breaks into this house, they gotta go through me to get to you. Nothing’s getting through me.”
My body melted at his words.
Needing to tell him all that his words meant to me, I pressed a kiss right over his heart and lingered my lips there on that spot.
“She likes that,” he whispered.
“No. I love that.”
He hummed.
Then... I felt it.
I needed to say it.
I felt it when he was inside me on a level I couldn’t begin to comprehend, but it wasn’t the right time... and now, after what we just shared, I lifted up on an elbow so I could look into those eyes that were only visible because of the moonlight filtering in through my bedroom window.
“Alexander?” I asked.
His eyes were smiling while his face was relaxed, “Yeah, Star Shine?”
“I love you,” I said with as much meaning as I could.
His eyes stared into mine, then he whispered, “I love you, too.”
There was something in his eyes, something I couldn’t read.
And I didn’t like it. Not one fucking bit.
I opened my mouth to ask what was wrong but thought better of it.
I knew Alexander.
I knew that if he wanted me to know something, he would tell me.
And him keeping this to himself... he’d earned that and so much more.
