Panic starts to overtake me. Fuck. I haven’t had a panic attack since I passed out in the bathroom at Pack Caruso’s house. But my breathing is becoming shallow, my blood rushing in my ears as a feeling of inescapable dread takes over.
“What do I do now then?” My voice sounds far away to my ears.
“I’d give it a week, and if nothing changes, I’ll come do another hormone panel…”
Her voice fades as my mind races. What if I go into heattomorrow? What if I’m reduced to a helpless pile ofneed before I have a chance to have a first time with Ethan, Brennan, and Maverick?
“Wren?” Maggie’s voice has me jumping. “Are you okay?”
“Oh…yeah, I’m fine,” I choke, my vision turning blurry. “Thanks for calling…I’ve got to go.”
“Wren—” Maggie’s voice cuts off when I hang up the phone. I need…I need…
My feet are moving without my permission, going to the alpha I know will make me feel like everything will be okay.
I can feel my chest heaving as I walk down the hallway, and open the door to Maverick’s office.
Chapter 27
Maverick
Ican’t fucking think.
I can’t fucking function.
Not when I know what her body feels like against mine, and I haven’t touched her again since.
It’s beendays, and I haven’t done more than kiss her.
But Ihaveto think. Function. Finish sorting through this damn pit of information and numbers Ethan compiled so we don’t have to worry about them trying to take her from us. We’ve managed to scare them, if they’re most recent press release is any indication. Blubbering tears about how this must be the work of whoever ‘kidnapped’ Wren, determined to smear their good family name. But I can’t put too much stock into it. I’ve finally managed to reach out to the witness I found, and all that’s left to do is finish building an iron-clad pile of evidence that they won’t be able to wiggle out of.
Unfortunately, I’m distracted as hell by the fact my cock is painfully hard, just like it was when Wren and Ethan disappeared into the bathroom the other night.
Every time I think about it, the fucking boner comes back.
But I refuse to touch it. I’m not going to be some shameless deviant, touching myself to the thoughts of my packmatepleasing our omega when all we’ve done is dry-hump each other like a couple of teenagers.
It twitches, as if silently taunting me. Fuck.
Maybe if I just grip it outside my sweats—
The door bursts open, and as if summoned by my thoughts, Wren stands in the doorway, looking like a deer in headlights.
The scent of her distress immediately kills my boner. “Baby Girl?” I stand, taking a step towards her. “What’s wrong?”
“I, um…I just got off the phone with Maggie.” Her words come out shaky. Dammit, what could have happened? Nothing crazy—she had insisted on calling Wren herself, and I know that if it was something bad, she would have told me first. “I…I…” Her expression is one of pure terror as her breathing comes in short pants.
“Come here,” I tell her gently, opening my arms.
An omega whine leaves her as she takes off, nearly catapulting into my arms. Her face buries in my neck, her small body shaking with nerves as she tries to calm her breathing. “I’m sorry,” she chokes out as I settle us back in the chair. “I…I’ve gone this whole time without having a panic attack, and…” she lets out a shuddering breath.
“Shhh, Baby, it’s okay, you have nothing to be sorry for,” I soothe, my hands running up and down her back.
She nods silently, her breathing calming down as she inhales some more of my scent.
“You’re doing so well,” I praise as the rise and fall of her chest becomes more steady. “That’s it, take a deep breath.”
My girl follows the directions I give her, before she lifts her head looking at me with red-rimmed eyes. “I’m sorry—”
