“Hey, girl!” Everly called when I walked in. “Did you make it through the storm okay?”

That depends on who you ask and what your definition of okay is.

“Yeah, how about you?”

“My place was fine, but the apartments below mine flooded. I’ve never seen so much water.”

“Me either.” According to the powers that be, several weather-related records were broken.

“I almost didn’t open today. I could be wrong, but I think most people are too busy with storm repairs and cleanup to go out for a drink.”

She was right. We never had more than five customers at a time, which was making the time pass tortuously slow.

It was just after seven and we were down to two customers when Sugar and Cookie walked in. Everly tensed beside me.

I waved my hand obnoxiously. “Hey, Sugar, Cookie!”

“What are you doing?” Everly asked out of the corner of her mouth.

“I know them. That’s Sugar, and that’s Cookie.”

“When did you become friends with bikers?”

“A few days ago.”

“They’re dangerous,” she whispered.

“Eh, I think that’s subjective.”

CHAPTER 22

SUGAR

One Week Later

Ileft Kalani in Makani a week ago, and I’d missed her annoying me ever since. She’d been a pain in my ass up until the last second.

“Text me before you get yourself into another stabby situation.”

“Only if it’s regarding Ashley. What? I won’t make promises I know can’t keep.”

I shook my head to clear my thoughts. I hadn’t heard from her and likely wouldn’t. I glanced at my phone and considered tossing it to the side and taking a nap when it vibrated in my hand.

Kalani:Ashley is here asking questions about me.

Kalani:I’m in the break room. I don’t think she saw me.

Sugar:Fuck. Do you know what she wants?

Kalani:I heard her ask Everly if I was working.

Sugar:Let me know when she leaves.

Kalani:I don’t like hiding from her.

Sugar:You’re not hiding. You’re setting a trap.

Kalani:Dirty talk! More please.
