“Understood,” I said excitedly and clapped my hands. “What are we doing?”

He motioned for me to follow him. “We’re going downstairs to check for water.”

“If you would’ve led with that, I probably would have gone back to your room.”

“You still can.”

“Not when I’m halfway down the stairs.”

When we reached the bottom, I looked around at the completely dry basement. “That was anticlimactic. What now?”

“We’re not finished.” He walked over to a large safe on the opposite wall and opened the combination. Then, he stepped inside. “Are you coming?”

“Coming where?” I asked hesitantly.

“In here.”

“No thanks. I don’t want to be the stupid girl in the horror movie. I’ll wait right here.”

He stepped out of the safe and moved to the opposite wall. “Take a look inside. I’ll stay right here.”

Cautiously, I moved closer and looked inside the safe. There was an open door in the back, leading to … “Where does that go?”

“You’ll see. But first, look to your right, at the inside of the door. Do you see the keypad? It’s impossible to get locked in if you know the code.”

“I don’t know the code.”

“Six-three-nine-eight-five. You wanna try it while the door’s open?”

“Yes.”

He waited patiently while I entered the code and watched the locking mechanisms engage after the light turned green. I entered it once more to be sure. “Tell me where it goes.”

“It’s the access to our grow rooms.”

“That’s what you’re checking for water.”

“Yeah. If the tubes flood, we’re fucked.”

I followed him from room to room as he checked for leaks and standing water. “This is fascinating.” They had three rooms full of plants. “What else is down here?”

“A lot of shit I’m not going to tell you about.”

“What about Matthew? He’s down here, isn’t he?”

“Yes, and no, you can’t see him.”

“I don’t want to see him, but kudos to you guys for your superior ventilation skills. You’d never know there was a rotting corpse nearby.”

“He’s in an area that’s been sealed off.”

“Are you going to leave him there?”

“I don’t know yet, but even if I did, I couldn’t tell you.”

“Right, club business,” I mumbled.

“Remind me to give you something when we get back to my room.”
