Rolling my eyes behind his back, I followed him into the clubhouse. When I saw Birdie and Coochie sitting at a table with Charli, I headed straight for them.

“Mind if we join you?”

“Of course not,” Birdie said, gesturing to the empty chair beside her. “Are you hungry?”

“No, but I’ll eat because I’m bored out of my fucking mind.”

She laughed and gently squeezed my hand. “I’ll get you something. Be right back.”

Resting my elbows on the table, I propped my head on my hands and looked around the room. I nodded my head toward a group of women seated around a sectional sofa. “Who are they?”

Sugar glanced over his shoulder. “The sirens.”

“You said they live here and work for the club. What do they do?”

“They take shifts at Charli’s Place and do shit around here like cooking, cleaning, and laundry.”

“Where do they live?”

“In the green barn behind the pool.”

“Do they get paid?” I asked.

“They get paid an hourly wage at Charli’s Place, but the work they do around the clubhouse is for their room and board.”

“That doesn’t sound like a bad arrangement. How does one go about being a siren? Is there an application to fill out?” I continued. I knew there was something he wasn’t saying, and Iwanted him to say it without me having to ask. Because there was no way I could ask without sounding like a stereotypical jealous girl when I was truly just nosy.

“You can’t be a siren.”

“Why not?”

“They don’t have any openings.”

I noticed Birdie approaching the table with my plate of food and tossed out some bait. “Yeah, that’s what I figured. Most good jobs stay filled. Can you let me know if a position becomes available?”

“What kind of position?” Birdie asked, placing the plate in front of me.

“I was asking about being a siren.”

She gasped. “You want to fuck all the brothers?”

I pretended to be shocked. “Sugar didn’t tell me that!”

“Because you already knew it.”

“I did not.

“You could’ve asked.”

“I would not.”

“I heard that.”

“No you didn’t.”

“Eat!”

Shortly after I finished eating,Whisker called the officers to church. Sugar looked at me pointedly.
