“I didn’t kill him,” I said.
“What?” she shouted and sat up in bed. “Why the fuck not?”
“For several reasons, but the main one was I didn’t want to go back to prison.”
“Don’t get caught.”
“Look who’s talking.”
“This is not about me. This is about you and the brother you didn’t murder. Focus. What are the other reasons?”
“I didn’t have time. I got on a plane to Hawaii within hours of being released from prison.”
“Planes fly back,” she said.
“Why are you peer pressuring me to kill my brother?” I asked.
“Because you need to heal.”
“I’ve healed. I don’t give two fucks about him.”
“So you wouldn’t care if I killed him?” she asked.
“Yes! You’re not supposed to be killing anybody right now! One murder at a time. Say it with me now. One. Murder. At. A. Time.”
“I’m not hearing no. I’m hearing later,” she said and nodded to herself. “Okay. One murder at a time.”
“Can we finish sleeping now?”
“Sure.”
Two, maybe three, seconds passed.
“Wait! We have to kill Ashley too!”
“We? Who the fuck is we?”
“Me and you,” she said. “Unless you want to be a pussy … like the road names of the members of this club. What the fuck is that about?”
“Rahhhhhhhh!” I screamed. “Go the fuck to sleep!”
“Fine,” she huffed. “Pussy!”
CHAPTER 20
KALANI
“I’m bored,” I told Sugar the next morning. We were stuck inside because of the storm, and I was feeling antsy. “Can we play a game?”
“I don’t have any games.”
“There are plenty of games you can play that don’t require anything other than people.”
“Such as?”
“Hide and Seek, Tag, Twenty Questions, Truth or Dare,” I rattled off. “And that one where you take turns asking questions. I don’t know what it’s called.”
“The last one seems safest.”
