“No,” he panted, “it’s too soon. We should take this slow.”

“It’s been twenty years. We’ve taken it slow enough.”

“You’re tired and should go to bed,” he said.

“You should join me in bed, and we can pick this conversation up in the morning.”

His brow crinkled, and I finally got to stroke the line between his eyebrows.

“My grumpy bear, you’re not getting rid of me that easily. I know you. If you go to bed alone, you’ll spend all night finding reasons we shouldn’t do this.”

“I need a shower.”

I perked up.

“Me, too.”

“Naughty girl.” His half-smile made another appearance, and I was a goner. “I don’t trust you to keep your hands to yourself.”

“That’s because you’re smart.”

“I want your hands on me more than I want to breathe, but you need sleep.”

I pouted, but he wouldn’t budge. I dozed until he returned, slick with water, wearing the towel so prominent in my daydreams. He was committed to toeing the line, but it was my nature to test him.

“Hopefully I get to see my favorite outfit a little longer this time,” I teased
