She wasn’t going to shake her shadows. That was clear.
So she let them escort her to the conference room. When she stepped in, therehewas. Looking all rumbly-sexy-thug in that dark heather suit he wore sometimes. It fit his shoulders perfectly. Made a woman want to touch.
He had helped her change everything between them, the least he could have done wastalkto her after they’d been rescued and carried off to Coleson Castle, right?
Nope. He’d been carried off by his buddies, and she hadn’t seen him since. He’d justlefther in the care of one Jake MacNamara who had rushed her—and her cat, retrieved from her apartment, of course—back to Melody and Houghton’s Castle of Ostentatiousness for the time being. Until the TSP felt it was safe for her to return to her apartment.
What was even up with that?
She didn’t even know where Dom had been staying. Probably hidden away in a cave somewhere. Her man was doing his best toescape. She wasn’t fooled. Madison just didn’t know what to do next. She really needed to come up with a game plan here. She hadn’t had much time in the past two days—everyone had been busydiggingthrough old files, old cold cases. Especiallyher. She had spent most of the last two days in the vault, where all the old boxes were kept. So much had been destroyed when the lab and evidence vault were bombed, and then destroyed by the tornado.
The storm—yes, that was just bad luck. But now she was half-wondering if one reason Bennett Russell had blown up the lab that day was to hidethis.Madison thought it was entirely possible. That was a theory she hadn’t had a chance to share with her caveman yet, though.
That whole caveman-avoids-Madison thing and all.
She looked at him. How she felt for the stubborn man slammed into her. Warts and all, this was her caveman. Probably forever. “So here you are. I was about to think you were in Alien Witness Protection in Roswell or something.”
“Just busy.”
But there was a look in his dark eyes that told her all she needed to know.
The man hadn’t forgotten what had happened between them at all.
“Sure, pal. I don’t believe it.” She crossed her arms over her chest. And waited.
“Dan and the others…we’ve been in meetings with the damned governor and chief ever since that morning.”
Well, that was at least acceptable.
But…he wasn’t getting away from her now.
She’d had enough of hiding. “We’re going to talk tonight, Dominic Vincent. You’d better be prepared.”
“Yes, ma’am. Now…what did you bring me?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know?”
“Don’t tease me—you know what it does to me. And now…I don’t have to keep my hands to myself any longer. Something to keep in mind.”
“Promises, promises. I just can’t wait.”

K.J. just staredat the lunatic in front of her. He’d caught her in the back hallway—after she delivered Madison to Acardi in the bullpen. “What? I suggest you say that again, and make yourself very clear before I shove my boot right up your ass.”
She just didn’t get it, why so many women in the patrol unit thoughtthisman was a god among men. Maybe he was very pretty to look at and was built like a male model—and the ass she’d just threatened was a nice one—but…arrogant prick didn’t begin to cover it.
This guy wasnothinglike his brother. Brett has the sweetest heart of any man she had ever met under that Romeo exterior. This guy had the emotional maturity of a rock. And about as muchwarmth.
“I said my brother was probably involved in something he shouldn’t have been—and I want you to level with me now. What was Brett doing?”
“I don’t have a clue. But if you’re implying he is dirty, what kind of brother are you?” K.J. didn’t have a family of her own now, but… “Brett is the most honest guy I know. He would never do anything like that. He just wouldn’t.”
Shouldn’t his own brother have his back?
“I used to think so.”
“You still should.” K.J. started to go around him. He shot out a hand, wrapped his fingers around her elbow.
