That seemed to take him aback. He put his drink down. “That’s not true.”

“There is no other Davenport heir?”

“Where did you get that from?” He studied me, standing with my arms crossed, so guarded. His ice just stoking my fire. “Did someone say something to you?”

“Yes. A woman approached me today. She said she was in the sex tape with you.”

“What?”

“The blonde from the sex tape. Her hair is red now. And yes, it was actually her. I got a screen shot and verified it.”

“Devi. Jesus.” He clawed his hand through his hair. “Whatever you want to know about the damn sex tape, I’ll tell you. You don’t have to watch it—”

“Oh, trust me. I am not going to watch it. I do that and you’re never touching me again.”

His jaw hardened. Now he had that scary look in his eyes, the one that said he wanted to pull out his scythe—if only that would solve this problem. “Where did this happen? What did she say to you?”

“It happened in the lobby of BHR Tower. You know, my new office? I’m sure you could ask Trey for the security footage so you can see for yourself.”

“She was in our office building?”

“Yes. And apparently she washere, too. Inside the penthouse. She really dangled that in my face.”

Dane stared at me, processing this. “She was never in the penthouse, Devi. Neither of them were.”

“She described it to me, in detail.”

“No,” he said. “I met her in San Francisco. That night… the tape… it happened there. She lives in San Francisco. They both do.” He rubbed his face. “And… you want to know about the video? They made it, like I told you. They were both involved in porn. They’d been in other videos.”

I could feel that this was uncomfortable for him to divulge. That the sex tape—everythingabout the sex tape—bothered him. That he thought he was dropping a bomb on me and I might hate him just that much more for it. He seemed to be bracing himself for my reaction.

But did he not realize I had Google?

“I know,” I told him. “I read all about it online, Dane.”

He shook his head. “I’m sorry for that. I should’ve just told you myself, so you didn’t have to read it. Please believe me that I did not know they were in porn. They didn’t tell me that. They were just two women I met at a party. I did not know it was going to end up online. There’s nothing more to tell. And my security team is working to try to keep the video off the internet. We’ve threatened both women with legal action. They won’t upload it again.”

“Well, either way, one of them was right here in Vancouver today. Chatting me up. She said you’re full of shit and I should get out of here before it gets worse.”

“Before what gets worse?”

“I don’t know. Everything? She said there’s another heir and implied that you might not even get your fortune. Is she talking about Lex?”

“You should’ve called me,” he said. “The minute this happened—”

“Was she wrong?”

Dane shook his head slowly. “You know Lex is my cousin. I don’t know if that’s what she was talking about, but she’s misinformed. There is no inheritance for Lex and he doesn’t want one. He was disowned by the family. ”

“Why?”

“Because his mother, my Aunt Laurinda, who you just met, was disowned. Long ago.”

I absorbed this, slowly. “That woman who just left is your aunt?”

“Yes. So I guess your ‘Dane is fucking every woman he meets behind my back’ theory is shot.”

I ignored that. “Why was she disowned?”
