“I just wonder something.”
“What’s that?”
“Why did you help me?”
“What do you mean?”
“You guys kill a human that’s been bitten, and you certainly didn’t help anyone else out of the club, so why me?”
It was clear to Ali that he didn’t want to answer, or maybe he didn’t know why. Maybe she shouldn’t question it, but it was out, and now she was going to have to hear it.
“I don’t know really, Ali. I heard you scream and I ran in there. There was something about the way you sounded that made me want to help you. I want to help all your kind, but we can’t. In the end, we can help more when we get rid of the vampires. I’m not helping you just because of wanting to though. I have my reasons.”
Ali almost asked what those reasons were, but she was starting to see that some things were better left to the unknown. She could have gone the rest of her life happily not thinking about all the things that she had to deal with now. She didn’t need to know about this other world that Cal was a part of. The supernatural was never something she even thought about, but now she was in the middle of it.
“So, what am I going to do here while you’re away?”
“Whatever you want. There isn’t much in the form of electronics, but there are tons of books in the library. The outside is pretty, just stay on the compound for your safety. If you want to go to the market or around the village, Dania will be around to assist you. All you have to do is ring the bell, and she will help with whatever you need.”
Ali thanked him, and he got up. Her eyes widened, and he looked down, pulling his sheet over himself when he realized that he was naked. It was the first time that she realized it as well. It gave her a funny feeling that stayed with her as he made her some breakfast. When it was over, she went to the bathroom to take a shower. Her thoughts were filled with possibilities of what could have happened the night before, and it was hard to get it out of her brain.
When Cal left to get some things done, she breathed a sigh of relief. It was hard to think when he was around, and she was thankful that she was able to get some time alone. It wasn’t such a scary place in the daytime as it was at night. She felt better to move around, and she explored her new surroundings that seemed to go on for days. The further back in the house she went, the deeper into the side of the mountain she went, and the older everything got.
Soon the walls were packed dirt and so were the floors. There was a chill as the temperature dropped several degrees and Ali almost turned back. She was creeping herself out, and there was something about the place that gave her the chills. She didn’t know why, but it called to her; at the same time, she was afraid. It was a strange mix of feelings going on inside of her simultaneously.
Then she was at the end of the long tunnel she had traveled down. She was shaking with the cold and trying to figure out why it felt so strange to be down there. It shouldn’t have been like that, but there was something drawing her deeper into the darkness.
The room was murky, and she could only see a little bit from the lights pushed into the hallway’s walls. There was just a bed in the middle of the room, and the rest of it was bare. It was a strange room, but it had so much energy coming out of it that she could practically feel it coursing through her. She moved forward and wanted to touch the bed for some reason, like it had magical powers or something of the like.
Ali was almost to the bed when she heard a gruff voice behind her, asking her what she was doing down there. It made her jump, and she turned around to an old male face that showed many years of life in the wrinkles and creases.
