Hunter glares at my guys before settling on my face, where it softens a fraction. “If we save you, maybe we can make things right and save ourselves, too.”

Chapter 2

Boden

––––––––

Sabrina shifts in hersleep, nestling deeper into my side. Her bad leg is slung over my hip, and she’s using my arm as a pillow with her hand resting on my stomach. When she squirms again, her palm winds up on my chest, and the resulting pang that lances through me has my eyes briefly closing for the first time in hours.

I’m well acquainted with the volatile thing trying to tear me apart from the inside out by now. We’re raised to be strong enough to keep the beast in check, to ensure that if we’re ever lucky enough to have it freed, we can control it instead of the other way around. But no one ever prepared me for how to handle when it goes quiet, like it’s... given up. Rather than feral snarls and it slamming itself around in a bid to escape like I’m accustomed to, Sabrina’s hand on my chest only inspires a lamenting whine.

Rubbing her lower back until she settles into a deeper sleep, I stare off into space, lost in my head. Yesterday was a complete shitshow. I’m thrilled for how it panned out for my sister; more so that our small pack is steadily growing with men I can tolerate, even respect a bit after yesterday. But Kaige, Hunter, and Damian? Knowing that they’re currently shacked up on the other side of the house?

Choking on a dick is too nice of a way for them to go out.

The new mark on my wrist catches the faint moonlight streaming in from the crack in my curtains, pulling me back before I can spiral through the same self-deprecating tirade that I’ve been having with myself for the past three hours.

‘I’m here because I want to be, not because I have to.’Sabrina’s words echo around my skull on repeat, chasing away the worst of my frustration.

After these past few weeks of hell, it means... everything. I’m happy that she chose us, but I wanted it to be because she wanted to, not because she didn’t realize what she was doing or didn’t have any better options. She has three more now, yet she stared them down while sinking her teeth into me instead.

As she restlessly squirms again, I look down at her with a soft smile. It doesn’t matter how we got here, or this mess with her family bringing new problems into the mix. She’s mine, ours, and that’s really all that matters.

“What is up with you Hawthornes and watching me sleep?” Groggily, she scrubs a hand over her face, grimacing as she realizes that she was drooling and hastily wipes away the evidence. “You’re going to give me a complex.” Stretching, she hisses in a sharp breath. “Can’t sleep?”

Simply grunting in agreement, I skip over the topic. “Let me check your leg.”

She rolls her eyes, but doesn’t protest as I slip out from beneath her. Flopping onto her back, she extends her arms above her head and arches her back in a languid stretch, waking up more fully.

I pause at her feet, raising an eyebrow. “That’s not nice.”

Pushing herself upright, she gives me a look of genuine confusion. “What’s not?”

Scoffing, I gesture at her. “Rolling around in my shirt and some tiny shorts, splayed across my bed and thrusting your tits up in the air. You’re hurt; stop taunting me with what I can’t have.”

Chuckling, she reclines on her elbows. “Hate to break it to ‘ya, but none of that was for you. I slept at a weird angle and need to crack my back, but it’s difficult without a counter or something to lean back against.”
