Page 50 of Cruel Promise

I adjust the hoodie around my neck, wishing I’d left my hair down to hide the heat creeping up my face.

“He showed up for a booty call? That’s what you’re telling me.” He doesn’t sound convinced but some of the cold has left his voice, so at least now I face the refrigerator version of Deacon instead of the freezer one.

“Sure. Yeah. We’ll call it that.”

The corners of his mouth twitch. “Is there something else you want to call it?”

Heat blooms across my face, making my cheeks burn with embarrassment. “Sex. You can just say we had sex. You know, like two consenting adults. It doesn’t have to be some dirty thing.“

“It’s a booty call, Kasey. Booty calls are dirty.”

I sigh. “Whatever.” Slumping in my seat, I cross my arms over my chest. “Happy now? Are we good?”

He snorts. “Am I happy that you confirmed what I already knew, that you’re boning that asshole? No. Can’t say I’m happy about it. But,” He shrugs. “We’re good. As long as you swear you didn’t—“

“I didn’t! Promise.” That was the last thing on my mind when we were…you know.

Deacon must see some kind of look on my face because he brings his fist to his mouth as he says, “Damn. It was that good?”

I lie forward and wrap my arms over my head, hiding from the mortification I will die from any minute now. “Stop,” I groan.

“Is that why you look like you’ve had such an interesting morning? Did you stay up too late doing the nasty, nasty?”

Shoot me now. Seriously. And who says that word like that these days?Gross.

“I’m done talking to you,” I mumble into my arms, loud enough for him to hear me. “You know I didn’t sell you down the river, so let’s leave it at that.”

“How—“

I raise my head and glare. “Nope. No questions. You got what you wanted, and I am not giving you the details of my sex life.”

Someone behind us snickers.

“Come on,” Deacon whines. “Is he as much of an unfeeling bastard in the sack as he is in real life? I bet he’s selfish too, huh? Makes you work for your—“

“Okay. That’s enough. How about we talk about you instead?” Anything to get him off this topic of conversation.

“Oh, I’m great in bed. And I’m real good at eating—“

“Not that,” I bite out. “You! Like life, or I don’t know. Stuff. But not that. I don’t need to know any of that.”

Any shards of ice that were in his expression before are officially gone as a wide grin splits his face, his eyes now filled with mirth.

“Alright. Fine.” He rolls his eyes. “You’re no fun.”

Well, at least we sorted all that out. I don’t appreciate him jumping to conclusions before hearing me out, but I can’t really blame him. It wasn’t a good look on my part. I should probably leave it at that. Class is about to begin and we’re still close to turbulent waters here, but sometimes you just have to risk it.

“You need to tell him.”

“No,” he deadpans, knowing who and what I’m referring to. “I don’t”

“Yes, you do,” I say, dropping my voice low. “He’s your brother. He should know.”

Deacon scoffs. “What he is, is an asshole. I’m good. Just because you’ve admitted you're sleeping with him doesn’t mean I have to like the guy now. He has his life. I have mine. We’ll leave it at that. Besides, I won’t have to deal with him much longer.”

My brows pull together. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Our professor walks in and for once, Deacon decides to be a studious college kid and pay attention. He ignores me most of the class. He’s not still angry with me anymore, from what I can tell. He’s just actually paying attention in class for once.
