He did not answer immediately. This was the worst part – the pause. A man who saidnoquickly was a man who had not considered the question. A man who paused was a man who was considering it honestly, and the honesty was the thing that made the room smaller.
“I don’t know,” he said.
I looked at him. He looked at me. The distance between us was six feet – the width of the back room, the old pub floor, the space between a woman at a bar and a man at a door. Six feet. And in those six feet: the bruise on my collarbone that he had put there. The corridor where his hand found my neck. The whisper about what he would do if someone hurt me on the walk he had memorised.
“That’s the wrong answer,” I said.
“Aye,” he said. “But it’s the honest one.”
I crossed the six feet. I stood in front of him. I put my hand on his chest. His heart was steady. Whatever had happened at the table – the leaning, the whisper, the promise – his heart rate had returned to normal. The containment was that complete.
“Then we work with honest,” I said.
His hand came up. His fingers found mine on his chest. He held them – gently, this time. The gentleness was a choice. I understood now that it had always been a choice. Every gentle touch from Alastair Rae was a decision made against the alternative, and the alternative was real, and he lived with the alternative every day, and the living-with-it was the bravest thing about him.
“We’re agreed,” Lachlan said.
The car. Driving back to the manor. Lachlan at the wheel. The Clyde on our left, grey and flat, the dock cranes moving in their slow mechanical patterns against the white sky.
“You were right,” he said. “About the third option.”
“Was that difficult to say?”
He calculated. I could see the calculation – the precise internal assessment of how much the admission cost versus how much the accuracy of the admission mattered. Lachlan’s calculations were always visible to me, because I had learned to read the face that gave nothing away to everyone else.
“Moderately,” he said.
I laughed. The sound filled the car – bright, unexpected, the kind of laugh that came out when the tension of the morning broke and what replaced it was lighter than relief. He glanced at me. The almost-smile. The one that lived in his eyes.
We drove home. The manor was cold. The fire was out. The study was dark and the afternoon light was failing and he closed the door and turned the lock and the sound of the lock was the signal, the translation point between the public partnership and the private one.
“Tell me what you need,” he said.
I told him.
He crossed the study in three steps. His hand found the back of my neck – not rough, precise, his thumb against my pulse point, measuring my heartbeat the way he measured everything. His mouth was at my ear.
“Hands on the desk.”
I put my hands on the desk. The wood was cold. The papers were beneath my palms – the Mackie counter-intelligence briefings, Rona’s financial analysis. The architecture of the crisis spread under my hands while his were on my hips, turning me, positioning me with the careful authority of a man who understood that the command was not the power. The trust that made the command possible was the power.
He undressed me from behind. Each piece of clothing removed with the same precision he brought to dismantling a financial structure – unfastening, easing, placing aside. His hands were cold from the drive and I felt the temperature difference everywhere they touched – my ribs, my spine, the dip at the small of my back. The cold made me gasp and the gasp made his hands pause, one second, before continuing.
“Tell me if you want to stop.”
I did not want to stop.
His voice was the instrument. The low, private register – stripped of strategy, stripped of the operational tone, the voice that existed only in this room with the door locked and the world held at bay. He saidstayand I stayed. He saidturn aroundand I turned and his face was close and his glasses were off andwithout the glasses his eyes were different – less defended, the grey of them darker, the calculation absent. He lifted me onto the desk. The papers crumpled beneath me. His hands on my thighs were firm and exact and he positioned me with the precision of a man who knew anatomy the way he knew architecture – structurally, thoroughly. I wrapped my legs around him and pulled and his composure cracked – a fracture line through the control, visible in his jaw, in his hands tightening, in the single sharp breath he took before he pressed into me.
I watched his face. The crack widened. His voice still held – measured, still giving instructions,hold still, look at me, stay– but his body had outpaced his language. His movements were no longer precise. They were urgent. The urgency was the confession – the admission that beneath the command structure was a man who needed this as badly as I did, who had spent the afternoon processing a threat he found personally offensive and was now in the locked study with the Clyde below, and the need was the honest part of him, the part the strategy couldn’t organise.
The pleasure was built on trust and the trust held everything else. His hands knew where to hold. His voice knew how to ask. And the asking – every time – confirmed that the power was given, not taken. The giving set me free.
Afterwards, in the cold study, with his jacket over my shoulders and his hand in my hair: quiet. The kind of quiet that required nothing from either of us. Rona walked back separately. She took the long route – past the High Street, past the docks, past the Merchant Villas.
