Canyon was still confused. He felt blindsided. He hadn’t paid his lawyer to work on Cheyenne’s case in years. No one told him that anything was going on behind the scenes. She hadn’t even reached out to him to let him know that she was coming home. Their last encounter came back to him. “I already filed for divorce.”
“Okay, so stop it. You don’t have to go through with it. I’m home now. We can work on us. You cheated, and I had an abortion. We both did shit that we have to accept responsibility for. My time in prison is behind me. All I can try to do is moveforward. I want to give us a try before I just throw this marriage away. You owe me that.”
“You see. You’re doing it already. I don’toweyou shit. The last time that I apologized was just that. The last time. I’m not rehashing this shit every got damn conversation,” he barked.
Cheyenne decided that she better chill for the moment. “Canyon, I’m free. I’m home from prison. We can touch. We can be together. I don’t want to argue. I want us to move forward with our marriage.”
He didn’t know what to say. He had started dating someone, and he liked her. He liked Yohana a lot, but Cheyenne was his wife. Despite what he said about not owing her, didn’t he owe her at least one more chance? Didn’t she deserve to have the faithful husband that she always wanted? He didn’t know how to feel. Cheyenne was finally free, and he wasn’t even happy. She stepped over the threshold, and it almost felt like a stranger was entering his home.
“I want to take a long hot bath, and I want a seafood boil. Oh my God Canyon, can you order me seafood? I want a glass of wine. It feels so good to be home.”
She was elated meanwhile he was stuck. He didn’t know what to say, think or feel. He just stood there while she headed toward the kitchen. “Babe, you were about to cook breakfast?” she called out. “That is your favorite thing to cook,” she laughed.
Canyon walked into the kitchen still feeling like the moment was surreal. He watched Cheyenne pour a glass of wine. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming home?”
“I wanted it to be a surprise. I got my sister to pick me up and drop me off. I can’t wait for a full day of pampering tomorrow. I want to get waxed and a pedicure, I need my nails done and my hair done. I need to go shopping.”
Canyon was glad that she’d be busy with all that. That way, he could meet Yohana for brunch. And tell her what? That his wifewas home? He already told her that he had filed for divorce, and he had. This shit was gon’ get messy quick.
“I’ll order your food and go pick it up,” he stated in a monotone. He wasn’t even happy that she was home, and that said a lot. All he could think about was how Yohana would take the news. He didn’t want to hurt her, but he felt that he’d hurt Cheyenne enough.
She closed her eyes as she sipped the wine. After a few more sips, she placed her wine glass on the table and walked over to him. “I’m so happy that I get to sleep with you tonight. I’ve been waiting for this for almost seven years.”
Canyon didn’t speak. He just leaned down and kissed her on the lips. He didn’t even feel shit. Normally, he didn’t have a problem telling niggas no. He didn’t have a problem breaking hearts, hurting feelings, or being honest, but Yohana was someone that he felt the need to be fragile with. He didn’t want to end shit with her and that said a lot, because he vowed to never cheat again. He filed for divorce. He told Cheyenne their marriage was over, but he guessed she felt that only applied to her when she was in prison. She came home acting like nothing ever transpired between them. How could he tell her that he had kind of moved on?
Canyon’s mood had shifted just that fast. He needed a blunt. It felt like the air in his own home was suffocating him, and he wanted out. Canyon ordered the food then went to pick it up. What the fuck was he gon’ do?
Yohana entered the restaurant with a smile. She was dressed in a cute nude dress that hugged her curves. She had been going extra hard in the gym, and she really felt like that bitch. Her box braids hung down to her ass, and no one would have guessed that Yohana was a day over twenty-five. She was led to a booth and as soon as she sat down, Canyon entered the restaurant looking good as he always did. Yohana eyed a group of three females sitting at the bar, and they were ogling the fuck out of him. She waved and got his attention, and she could immediately tell that something was wrong. The spark that his eyes normally held when he saw her wasn’t there.
“What’s wrong?” she asked before he even sat down.
When he did sit down and look over at her, she saw regret. Yohana already knew she wasn’t going to like what he was going to say.
“Yesterday when we were on the phone and my doorbell rang, it was my wife. She’s home, and I had no clue she was coming. She didn’t tell me. The lawyer didn’t tell me. Nobody fuckin’ told me.”
Her breath caught in her throat. He didn’t look happy about his wife being home, but something told her that his wife being home would change everything for them. “So, the divorce. You’re not going through with it?” she tried to keep her voice even, but she was real close to being hurt.
“I know our marriage is over, and I’m pretty sure she knows it too. She just wants to try. She’s so hopeful, and she acts so happy, and I don’t have it in me to hurt her.”
He looked sorry. He really did, but Yohana felt like she was dying inside. She was no longer hungry. The waitress came over to take their drink orders, and Yohana offered her a small smile. “Nothing for me. I’m leaving.”
“Give us a moment please,” Canyon requested.
“Canyon, I have to go.” She couldn’t even look him in the eyes. Her chest felt tight. “I wish you and your wife the best.”
“Yohana, look at me please.” His voice held a pleading tone and for as hard as it was, she looked at him. And her heart broke some more. “I don’t want us to end.”
She let out a light chuckle. “I can’t be your mistress. I won’t do that. And you said you weren’t going to cheat anymore. At least give her that. If you’re going to try, then you have to try all the way. What we had was fun.”
Canyon felt desperate. She stood up, and he did the same. “Yohana.”
She walked past him and out the door. He followed her to her car and when they arrived, he wouldn’t let her open the door. He pinned her against the car, and his cologne felt as if it was suffocating her. “Please don’t do this. I like having you in my life,” he whispered.
“You can’t have both,” she answered in a small voice. She was hurt, but she would live. “If you’re going to be with your wife for whatever reason, be with her all the way. Don’t simply try and appease her while keeping me on the side. It was nice getting to know you.” She gave him a small smile.
“Yohana, my dick wouldn’t even get hard for her last night. I don’t say that to embarrass her. I’m not a man trying to have his cake and eat it too. My head wants you.” He left out the part about his heart wanting her too.
“Then, you have some decisions to make.”
