“So you found me. Now what?”

“Why did you leave? Why didn’t you wait for me?”

“Why did you lie to me?” she asked, crossing her arms.

“Sit down and let me explain.”

“I don’t like to be told what to do.” She lifted her chin a bit higher and let him know who the stubborn one really was.

“Please, will you sit down and let me explain? I owe it to you. I know I do. I was wrong and will admit it, but just because I’ve got all that money in the bank doesn’t mean I’m someone different from who you fell in love with. I thought I explained that better before I went to the hospital and didn’t expect you to be gone when I returned.”

“I needed to have my space. I almost left but then calmed down some. I was going to tell you where I was. I just didn’t want to bother you when you were with your family.”

“I’m not with them now. We need to talk. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kept this from you but I did. And you have to admit, even you made a comment that people don’t talk about their money or situation early in a relationship.”

Her lips twisted in frustration.

“I know. And that is why I didn’t drive home. I get it. Maybe I overreacted. I could be doing a lot of that lately.”

“You’re not alone.”

“Can we please just get everything out right now? I want no more secrets. I have nothing to hide. I told you everything. Well, one thing I didn’t.”

He let out a sigh and moved to sit on her bed. She went to the chair.

“What?”

“I’ve only been with two other people besides you. For sex. I just…I don’t know. I never connected with anyone like you.”

“Damn,” he said. He hadn’t expected that. “I’m not going to get mad at you for not saying that to me.”

“Really? Even though looking at me that night or the other times you saw me in Pulse you wouldn’t have thought of it?”

“Nope. Because the way someone looks means nothing to me. I’ve said that so many times.” He held his hand up. “I get it.You’re right. I might not have been as talkative to you if you had come in dressed like you used to. And I did get upset that you didn’t tell me you’d changed. Do we need to rehash that?”

She shook her head. “No.”

“Then let me tell you everything. Maybe not bank account details.”

“I don’t want that. I don’t need it either. I never did. I just want you. I wanted things to make sense. And when they didn’t, you had a reason for it. I believed that. And it just makes me feel like a fool.”

He blew a huge breath out. “I’m sorry. I never wanted that.”

“There are a lot of things in our lives we never wanted but it still happened.”

“Yeah. I know.”

He patted the bed next to him. This shouldn’t be hard to say but it kind of was.

Maybe more than the wealth.

She got up and moved closer and sat next to him. “I’m a genius.”

“What?”

“I’m a certified genius. I’ve always been smart and brainy, but of course my parents had me tested. My grandfather told everyone I was just like him.”

“Was he a genius too?” she asked.
