“I do?” He scratched at the back of his neck.
She furrowed her brows, danced her fingertips down her neck. “Yeah…you’re making me nervous?”
He was makinghernervous? Because just being in her presence was making him so nervous his palms were sweaty despite it being less than fifty degrees outside.
Davis wanted to have not only the conversation about their relationship, but about the offer while they were alone. But maybe, presenting the offer to her out in public and with the kids around would mean she couldn’t freak out at him. If his offer offended her, she wouldn’t yell in front of all these people.
On second thought, maybe she would. Kelsey didn’t care what people thought. But the sooner he got this off his chest, the better.
He rubbed at the back of his neck. “You caught me.”
“I knew it. Okay, spill it.”
“I’ve been meaning to talk to you about this for the past week.”
Her expectant expression shifted to worriment, and she fidgeted with the sleeves of her jacket.
There had been a lot going on between them lately. They hadn’t had a chance to even discuss what went down in the hotel room, never mind in her office. And if he even mentioned cake, he’d get aroused in an instant. At the pumpkin patch didn’t feel like the right place for that.
“Things between us have been…different, so I don’t want you to think this has anything to do with that. Kelsey, I—”
“Hey, you two,” Maddie’s greeting interrupted his already jumbled words.
Davis jerked his head up and found Norah and Maddie standing near the picnic table.
“Hey, ladies, what are y’all up to?” Kelsey asked.
“Ugh, day date,” Norah grumbled.
“At the pumpkin patch? That’s cute,” Kelsey replied. “I’m so glad you’re out there dating again.”
Davis frowned at their intrusion.
“I talked her into it,” Maddie admitted.
Kelsey grinned. “Of course you did. Who’s the lucky guy?”
“No one you know,” Norah said, squeezing onto the picnic bench next to Davis.
His chest tightened as he scooted closer to Kelsey and fidgeted with the popcorn bag in front of him.
“Davis, can you pretend to be my on again off again boyfriend so I can shake this guy?” Norah asked.
Suddenly attentive, he whipped his head up to look at her. “What?”
“Norah, no,” Maddie whined.
“We both know this guy isn’t for me and this is gonna go nowhere.”
“But you gotta at least try,” Maddie said.
“Believe me, I tried.” Norah turned to Davis, giving him a pleading look. “Please, Davis. Just for a few minutes.”
He bounced a knee while his heart raced.
“You sure?” Maddie asked, looking at Norah.
“I’m sure. I’m not ready for all of this.”
