“Hey, Sophia.”

She dipped her chin, fluttered her eyelashes, and smiled. “Hi, Davis, right?”

His brows pinched together. Not only had Sophia asked for him, but she’d also deciphered which twin he was. “Yeah.”

“I was wondering if you had a date already to the Halloween couples costume party?”

Was she really asking him out? And in front of Garrett?

Garrett cleared his throat. “Sorry, darlin’, but he’s already got a date. Me.”

Her cheeks blushed. “Oh.”

“But that doesn’t mean we can’t save a dance with your name on it.” Garrett winked and she giggled.

“Sounds good, I’ll see you then.” She fluttered her fingers at them both as she backed away from their table.

“What the hell was that?” Davis asked.

“What?” Garrett shrugged. “It’s not like you would’ve done something about that.”

He wasn’t wrong, Davis didn’t want to go with Sophia, but it was that a woman seemed to finally be into him, not Garrett and he’d gone and cock-blocked him. “That’s not the point.”

“You’re too busy pining after someone you don’t have a chance with because you’ll never measure up to the expectation of her dead husband.”

“I know you’re pissed, but leave her out of this.”

“Leave who out of what?” Kelsey asked, suddenly standing at their table.

“Oh…hey, Kels,” Davis said, rubbing the back of his neck.

Her brows furrowed. “What’s going on?”

Garrett pushed his chair out and stood. “Why don’t you ask Davis, I’ll let him fill you in.” He stomped off, pushing forcefully through the door.

Heat filled Davis’s cheeks and his heart raced.

“Whoa, what’s got his panties in a wad?”

“It’s nothing. Just brother stuff.”

She pursed her lips as she stared after the door before returning her attention on him. “Show stuff?”

“Not this time.” He wasn’t entirely lying. Though this time it had more to do with Kelsey and O’Henry’s.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt,” she said as she took Garrett’s seat across from him and proceeded to break off a piece of his remaining pumpkin loaf and shove it into her mouth.

He quirked a quizzical brow at her and a smile pulled at the corner of his lips.

“What?” Her voice went up. “I’m hungry. And it didn’t look like he was coming back.”

A chuckle escaped him and a calmness filled him.

“How about you? How’s your appetite?” She waggled her dark brows at him and he shook his head in amusement.

“It’s fine. As you can see.” He gestured at his plate with the mostly uneaten baked goods. Poking the fork into the moist apple spice cake and taking a huge bite. Still chewing, he said, “Perfect, even.”

An enticing smile grew on her lips. “Oh good. Because I was gonna say, if it wasn’t, I’d be happy to take that off your hands. You know my mama’s apple spice cake is my favorite.”
