“More than you know.”

In what felt like one swift motion, Davis took her into his arms, pulling her on top of him. She didn’t want to think, only act, but she couldn’t help it. She was impressed by his maneuvering. By his skills in this department. This was a side to him she’d never experienced before. And it ignited something fierce inside of her. A passion. She frantically pulled his shirt up his torso, and he helped by ripping it all the way off.

He was beautiful, as he lay on display beneath her. Unable to resist, she rested her palms on his chest and ran them against the firm muscle, gliding them over his rippled abs. He fisted the hem of her sweatshirt and yanked it over her head.

Without speaking, and as he watched her with hooded eyes, she unhooked her bra, releasing her breasts. She tossed the bra over the edge of the bed, dropping it to the floor.

Davis stared at her as she straddled him, fully exposed, yet he didn’t touch her. He simply gazed at her with an appreciation only someone who genuinely loved her could. She could see the way he saw her. Imperfectly perfect. Wanted. Desired.

It was a beautiful moment she wanted to cling to, capture the look in his eyes and cherish it. Take a mental photo of it. So she never forgot.

Davis ran his fingers up the curve of her hip, featherlight and cautious, even as his gaze smoldered. She could tell he was holding back, savoring this fragile moment trapped in time.

Her pulse raced when he lifted his hand higher, his rough fingertips leaving goosebumps in their wake. He let out a soft groan, his large palm cupping her ribs, and slowly, torturously so, he inched toward her breast—

And then the magnificent and delicate moment imploded.

Kelsey’s phone rang, the sound intrusive. But what was even worse, the ringing competed with the rumble of Davis’s stomach.

She clasped a hand over her mouth, hiding a laugh.

“Don’t laugh. This is your fault. It’s that damn food.” His stomach gurgled again.

Kelsey suddenly felt vulnerable straddling him half naked. She clambered off him, searching the floor for her shirt and covering her bare chest with it once she located it. Her phone continued to ring and she read the contact just before she answered.

Mama.

“Hey, Mama, what’s up?”

“Hi, love bug.”

From Kelsey’s peripheral, she caught Davis hopping out of the bed and racing to the bathroom. She winced, covering the mouthpiece of the phone while she hollered, “Sorry!”

“I w-was wondering…if you could pick m-me up? J-just real quick like,” her mom said.

Kelsey threw her head back and groaned, dropping onto the edge of the bed. Her mom had been doing so much better lately. “Mama, I can’t. Remember, I’m out of town for the night.”

“I swear, love bug, it’ll take jus-just two seconds.”

“Mama,” she half shouted, frustration building in her chest. “Do you hear me? I’m not home. I’m in Denver.”

“Denver? What the hell you doin’ in Denver?” Her words slurred.

Kelsey was distracted by the closed bathroom door. Torn by the conversation with her mom and Davis who might need her. This feeling was something she’d hoped she could’ve avoided by going away for the weekend.

“Davis and I came for that appointment with the attorney Mr. O’Henry set up.”

“Oh, that was this weekend? Why didn’t you r-remind me? I tol’ you I’d watch the kids.”

“It’s fine. They’re with the Whitleys.”

Her mom grunted into the phone, but Kelsey ignored it. She wasn’t one for picking fights. It was easier to let her mom vent and for Kelsey to stay quiet.

“Where are you?” she asked.

“Downtown. Cosmos bar.”

“Let me see if I can get someone to come get you. Don’t leave Cosmos.” Kelsey ended the call with her mom and her thumb slid through her list of contacts on her phone.
