“We can talk about anything else you might want to try, or not try. I’ll do it properly next time, we can discuss it.”

I nod, shrugging. “I like trying new things, I’m not going to break, Alfie. And I’ll tell you if I don’t like something.”

“I know, love. I just don’t want to do anything that might bring up bad memories.”

Could I be anymore in love with this man? He’s so thoughtful and caring, it makes my heart ache. Alfie pulls me against his chest and I snuggle in, my finger tips running along his abs until he clenches and grabs my hand, biting at the tips playfully.

I twist my head and drop a kiss against his shoulder. “I’d like to point out that even though I quit today, I do need to find another job first.”

He chuckles. “I don’t think it will take you long.”

How can he be so sure? I’d been on a few of my work experience days with people I’ve met from our networking events, but none had jumped out at me as something I wanted to pursue. The emergency room shadowing with Caleb was by far the most interesting. You never knew what was going to happen, but it was always extreme, someone in the middle of a crisis or breakdown. It was an adrenaline rush, jumping from patient to patient, making quick decisions and recommendations for immediate care. Caleb asked my opinions, taking on board what I considered, but guiding me when I wasn’t sure. He was verypatient and completely different at work from how he had been at the Dinner Club and the charity ball. There was no flirting at all, which made it clear to me he was just trying to wind Alfie up.

The only thing I keep coming back to is setting up a practice like Alfie has. Or working in one. It’s a similar environment to what I have now, and at a pace I like. It can be slow, but it’s thoughtful, and you can really see the improvements that are made as the weeks go on.

“We’ll see. I can’t say for sure, but I’m hoping something will crop up. Hopefully, before graduation at least.”

“It’ll work out. And besides, you have a job with me for as long as you need one. And it’s not like you need to worry about rent.”

“True. That has been amazing this year. I’ve saved so much money already.”

I look up at him, but he’s frowning, like the concept of me saving money isn’t one that sits well. I laugh. “You look like I’ve just told you I’m gifting all my money to the Raccoon Society.”

“Sorry, I was just thinking.”

“About the raccoons?”

“Yes,” he rolls his eyes. “About the raccoons. We must put more trash out to help them.”

I laugh, rolling over so I’m straddling him again.

“This really is exquisite,” he hums, his fingers trailing along the silk panels of the bodysuit.

“I’m glad you like it. I bought a few other things too.”

His eyebrows lift and his eyes widen at my admission. “Really?”

I nod slowly, biting my bottom lip. “Maybe I’ll wear one for you tomorrow night.”

“We’re going to Dinner Club tomorrow night. A celebratory one.”

“I know.” I bend forward so my lips brush against his. “And now you’ll be thinking about it all night, wondering what I have on underneath.”

“Love, you’re diabolical.”

I smile wickedly. “And hungry. Shall we eat?”

I feel his cock pulse beneath me, and I laugh at his scowl.

“Come on, I’ll make it up to you after we eat.”

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Mia

We pull up to Lottie’s house, and the sight of the floor to ceiling windows still has my mouth parting in awe. I think about the library and how Alfie took me hard and rough the last time we were here. I wonder whether we’ll get a chance to sneak away tonight.

Alfie’s hand slips into mine, and before we can even knock, the door swings open. We say our hellos to everyone, and they say congratulations. Katie and Lottie both pull me in for a tight squeeze as Jonesy gives me a stern nod, which I take as his highest compliment.
