“Like when it’s ten on one.”

She hadn’t told me that before. All I knew was she’d been jumped by some rebels or anti-Durands. Knowing that the numbers had been so uneven made my very core shake with a combination of fear and rage.

I swallowed down the urge to yell at her, making my voice come out calmer than I felt. “Especially when it’s ten on one.”

Jack turned, and I shifted back so she could face me. Her eyes sparkled from emotion.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.” She took a deep breath and blew it out. “I didn’t want to bother risking your life if it ended up being nothing. I really did think I could handle it.”

“See? That.” I pointed out, leaning both hands on the door over her head. “You keep thinking it’s some kind of big hassle for me to have your back, when I’d rather be right there, down with you in the trenches, than waiting on the side lines, terrified I’m going to lose you at any moment.”

Her head leaned back so she could look me fully in the eyes. “I really made a mess of everything, didn’t I?” She huffed a laugh. “Even Tate yelled at me.”

“Did he now?” I brushed a lock of her hair away from her face. “I can’t imagine how you could have stopped yourself from laughing as he yipped like a little puppy.”

Jack giggled and shoved at my chest. “Stop. He’s taller than you.”

“And yet… he’s still a dog.” I shook my head with a grin. “You’re never going to convince me he’s scary.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t say that.” Jack smirked, her eyes twinkling for a different reason now. “He might not be scary, but his piercings sure are.”

My brows rose. “Piercings?”

Jack nodded with barely contained glee. “Oh yeah, they’re the most incredible things I’d ever felt in my li—” She let out a squealas I threw her over my shoulder and strode toward my bedroom. “Julian, what are you doing?”

I smacked her on the ass. “Quiet. It’s time to learn the new meaning of incredible.”

Chapter eight

Jack

OfallthewaysI thought our conversation would go, I didn’t expect it to end with me tossed over Julian’s shoulder. I shouldn’t be surprised though, he was just as competitive as I was, if not more, and hearing about Tate’s piercing definitely pushed some buttons for him.

“What are you going to do to me?” I breathed, more out of breath for what I knew was to come than from physical exertion. I yelped as I was unceremoniously dumped onto his bed.

Julian wasted no time digging into his drawers and pulling out various items of different colors and materials. Some were big enough to make even my eyes widen.

“Why professor, does the headmaster know that you so many inappropriate toys in your apartment?” I teased, unable to hold back a giggle at just how many toys he had. Seriously, why did someone need so many?

Smirking, Julian picked up what seem to be some kind of clamps. “Some have piercings others have toys.”

“Julian,” I screeched, backing up from the pile on the bed, “I hope you don’t think you are sticking any of those things in me.”

The heated look told me that he did and he would. “Take off your clothes.”

He didn’t wait for me to obey, pulling his grey cashmere sweater over his head leaving his muscular chest bare for my purview. Last time we’d been in this room, the light had been dim, and I’d been in too much of a hurry to have him inside of me to take my time looking him over.

Now, I ate up every inch of him, from his broad shoulders to his tapered waist. A scattering of scars decorated his skin.

The scars did nothing to make any part of him unattractive. If anything it only made me want him more.

When you lived with supernaturals, scars were not something you worried about or saw very often. And while hunters healed faster than the average human, they had nothing on my healing abilities. Nary a scar marred this perfect body. But seeing Julian’s made me want to lick every single one of them.

My eyes slipped down to the trail of pale blonde hair that led into the front of his pants, where his hands sat at the waist band. I dragged my lower lip between my teeth, lifting my eyes to meet his normally bright blue gaze, now darkened with desire.

“What are you doing?” he asked, not removing the rest of his clothes.

Leaning back on my hands, I let my lips tug up at the edges. “You’re always telling me to be more observant, I just want to make sure I get a good grade.”
